Train tickets in Advance

If you want complete flexibility to travel on ANY train from London to Castle Cary and back on the direct route, then yes the £56 return fare is the best option. Whilst it should be easy enough to get your intended train from London, it may not be quite so easy to get to Castle Cary in time for your intended train back again. That said, I've never had a problem myself. And allways get my intended train.

If you want to get it cheaper than £56 but travelling on specific booked services, then the technique is a little different this year.

It seems that this year First Great Western aren't offering the very cheap advance tickets from London-Pewsey during Glastonbury. Last year even as late as late May it was possible to get cheap £6 advance singles. Unless they did make these available this year and they've allready been snapped up quickly, then this year the cheapest available is £13 single. Currently £13 on the 0818 and 1106 from London-Pewsey on Wednesday 24th, and £14.50 on the 1321 from Pewsey-London on Monday 29th. So that's £27.50 for that part of the journey. And for the Pewsey-Castle Cary part of the journey, you'll need to get a £16 off-peak return. You can travel on either the 0940 or 1203 from Pewsey-Castle Cary on the outbound journey, which are the 0818 and 1106 from London. And for the return journey the 1245 or 1541 from Castle Cary. Total cost then £42, which is a significantly saving on the £56 return.

Also as mentioned the slightly longer route. Firstly the London Waterloo-Westbury, Westbury-Castle Cary route. Which works out at about £32. Or London Paddington-Bath, Bath-Cary route which works out at £34 in total, providing you quickly snap up the cheap advance £9.50 singles between London and Bath Spa.

Cheap(ish) advance tickets for your journey are now available to purchase. Leaving Castle Cary at 2005 or 2112 on the Sunday evening to Didcot Parkway, tickets are £19. Normally they would have tickets as cheap as £14.50. But still, £19.50 isn't too bad really. It's not possible to get it cheaper than this by splitting the tickets.

Get 'em quick otherwise they'll go.
