The Libertines

In today's Metro was an interview with Peter Doherty about his new solo album and the usual questions about sex, drugs, and Libertines reunions.

Allegedly, they were offered £2million from Festival Republic a while back to play Reading & Leeds 2009; although this is looking unlikely with the current lineup rumours. (Kings of Leon and Arctic Monkeys are pretty much certs, and its unlikely that there will be three 'indie days' or that The Libertines would play under either of those bands).

Where does Glastonbury come in? Well Festival Republic are involved with Glastonbury, Glastonbury is said to have four headliners, two being American and two being British. That and The Libertines have been involved with every Glastonbury since their incarnation in some form, beit The Libertines sans Peter, Dirty Pretty Things, Babyshambles, Carl or Peter solo gigs. Both Peter and Carl have a 'love' for Glastonbury and the ideology surrounding it as the mother of all festivals.

Could The Libertines be the fourth headliner?

Metro

Pete Doherty says a reunion with his old band The Libertines is set to become reality after receiving a staggering offer of £2million from festival organisers.

The druggie claims he and former bandmate, Carl Barat, are set to end years of bitter feuding to cash in on the offer. But there's one bizarre condition - Pete has his 'darkness' levels measured. He let details of the money-spinning deal slip after he was interviewed on the tattered state of their relationship.

Asked if they were speaking again, Pete told the NME: 'We had some ridiculous offers to headline Reading. £2million to headline this festival, £1million to headline that festival and I said, 'Why don't we just do it? Let's get the old band back together.''

But Doherty says while he can't resist the cash, Carl actually wants the reunion to be about 'friendship' more than money. Pete reveals: 'He said, 'Yeah, but we can't travel in separate cars.' 'Well, why would we?' and he said, 'We have to be friends, we can't just do it for the money.''I said, 'OK, well let's be friends! Friends who go and make lots of money together' y'know, because I haven't got any money and I know he's skint. '

Revealing Barat's deal breaker, Doherty reveals: 'I shouldn't tell this to you… he said I had to go and see an energy consultant, like some new-age guru who is going to measure my energy levels and see if I'm still surrounded by darkness.

'If I am then I'm not allowed to go near Carl because I'll tap into his good energy and as usual I'll sap all the good energy and bring nothing but darkness into his life and all this.Potty Pete's plan to return comes after he fell out with the band back in 2003 after reportedly breaking into Barat's flat. He formed his own group Babyshambles, while Barat went on to form the group Dirty Pretty Things.

Did The Libertines play is sans-Pete? I'm not sure about 2003 but I know they pulled out of the Sunday of 2004 and were replaced by Supergrass. I saw them two weeks later at T in the Park and they played with their guitar tech in Pete's place.

Reading must really be desperate this year if they're offering that amount of cash to a band like the Libertines.

People last year were complaining that The Verve weren't big enough to headline Glastonbury, but in terms of name value, interest level, and what they've actually achieved the Libertines surely rank well below.. I accept that The Libertines are far more popular now than they were when they existed, but I can't for the life of me see how they could be considered a headline act by any standard.

The only possible justification for giving them a headline slot would be as a one off final gig, and even that'd be a stretch.

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
    • Easily my favourite set of the day.
