have you never seen the show before? that's nothing compared to making a convertible renault espace and somehow setting a drive-though carwash alight with it

I thought the stig was one main guy, who is an ex le mans 24 hour winner, but going through a list of british le mans winners that seems unlikely.

I also read that when a company doesn't want to trust someone with their car, they put their own test driver in the overalls.

Great to see Hammond back and un-mental B) i do think its funny that the beeb have made youtube take down the video of the crash, while hundreds if not thousands of other bbc clips are up there. :D

yeah the black stig was apparantely Perry McCarthy. He is an ex-formula one driver.

However, he only ever competed in something like 10 or 11 F1 races in his career in 1992, he spent more time as a test driver.

He released a book. His autobiography called Flat out, Flat broke. In it he says he is the stig.

The top gear bosses were well pissed off with this and "killed" the stig off (thats why he used to wear black but now he wears white)

the black stig was killed off when he drove a car off an aircraft carrier into the sea

The new identity of the stig is officially unknown.

But.. I always spend most of those bits asking my daughter if all the cock ups ( such as busting the water main, setting that car wash on fire, breaking 2 boats in the trip to Sweden to name but 3) are planned or genuine accidents. If they're planned those boys should win BAFTAS 'cos their guilty looks & schoolboy giggles always seem so genuine............

You're right on some of the cock-ups GF - in the last series, the caravan fire was definitely staged and I would imagine the same goes for the car wash fire; however some of the stuff going wrong definitely are accidents - such as the boats breaking down (mechanical devices do go wrong, especially when pushed to their limits). (See also Hammond's accident - that certainly wasn't staged!)

    • It would be piss-easy for a bot to manage, though.
    • I've heard that ticket sales for other events that use the same system have included the question 'are you still there?' on each window/browser you have with a place in the queue. If you don't confirm you are, it'll assume you're not and that place will drop.   I've no idea if Glasto/See will adopt this, but it would be challenging to keep on top of with many windows open.
    • People who're struggling are already priced out, so I don't think a bump in price will affect who attends. There'll still be a cross section, leaning young. I also think they'll do a soft breaking of the £400 ceiling, keeping the ticket price just below but having postage take it over. Next year the ticket itself will be over that threshold.

    • Not sure if this has been mentioned but new La Roux album out November - was meant to play in 2020 but hasn't found her way back onto a lineup. If any excuse just to hear this absolute banger on the fields next year!
