Travelling from Holyhead/Wales

My boat arrives at holyhead aorund 5 o'clock in the morning on the Wednesday and I will be hitting the road straight away to Glastonbury in my car. Does anyone has any advice on the best route to take? the standard Google maps search suggests heading to Birmingham then down from there, is this the obvious, best route considering traffic and everything else?

I don't envy the drive!

If you're off the ferry sharp and go the Birmingham route you may get through before the morning rush hour. If not I'd take the toll road.

Failing that route have a look at the A55 cutting through Wrexham, Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Kidderminster and joining the M5 at Worcester.

The route through Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Kidderminster will be slow at that time of the morning but as least you should keep on moving so the frustration level will be lower. The problem with the toll road is that you then have to get on the M42 which will be slow at that time as the morning as well. Its a tough one the M6 round Birmingham from 7am - 9am is generally a disaster zone but you could get lucky

Try changing your ferry to the late evening one on the Tuesday that arrives into Holyhead at 1.30am or so, would give you a much better run at the journey south...my friends are on the morning one on the Wednesday and are usually on site around 6pm given last few times. I'm leaving on the Monday but staying with friends on the way down.

This sounds like sound advice i would be inclined to take the Shewsbury route.

Id love to but my sister cant get of work on the Tuesday so this is our only real option!

What about traveling via Portmadog, Builth Wells, Newport, what would that be like?

Il just have to think wither or not i wana rush down and get there asap or enjoy a nicer route. Its maybe a good opportunity to see some places that i usually wouldn't so i could also be tempted into the scenic route

Thanks for all the advice lads

Hey if you're travelling from Ireland. You could change your ferry to the rosslare-fishguard route its a much easier trek along the M4 and you don't have too much traffic. You get straight to Bristol. Theres late ferries on Tuesday evening.

If you are planning on the Shrewsbury route be aware that the Highways Agency are doing a lot of work on the roundabouts on the roads round the town including some night time closures

Generally the delays aren't too bad, but last week following an accident there were 3 hour delays as its a bit of a bottle neck round that bit of road network

    • I'm surprised they risked it, especially after nearly missing their Glasto 22 slot under similar circumstances  I did see someome say Ellie didnt sound as strong as recently but I'm guessing playing 3 shows in 2 different continents doesnt help that    On the topic though I can definitely see them doing a Fontaines and having a break over winter before a few final Clearing shows next summer
    • That's fair on WA - I did recall people thinking Fontaines would take this year off before this was announced.    On the subject of Wolf Alice, they did Lollapalooza in Chicago on Saturday then Kendal Calling last night. Bit of an odd choice, no? Half imagine at Kendal that they would've been just exhausted.
    • Just logged onto the app to start planning my days and there really are a LOT of stages missing. Apart from the Seaside Stage there is no Casemates this year etc. Apart from the Seaside Stage, there are no Casemates this year, etc. Can't see anything about the kids field really. And there's local acts that are normally there like Kojak's Revenge that aren't appearing either.  Normally we get down fairly early but I can't see anything before 3pm I'm keen to see. Only one real clash as well, which is good, but it's thin and it's not thin in the sense of "I've seen a lot of these acts before"
