Expired passport as ID

Quick question on behalf of my boyfriend.

He's American, so will probably need to bring a passport for ID (can't see the bars accepting the CA drivers license..), but taking the same passport he needs to get home with seem silly (even if it lives a lock up for most of the time) - will the bars/wristband folks accept and expired passport as ID? The US system is the same as the UK in that it has the back corner cut off or a hole in it, but the ID portion is fully intact.

Instinct says this will be fine, but confirmation from anyone who has done this, or has worked at the bars would be great.

Thanks!

Ok, thanks. Passport it is!

He and I would absolutely never "argue" at all if that's the policy - I'm not sure what gave you that impression. I wasn't asking for a way around it, I was just sounding out an idea I had.

I had the same thought about the lock ups, I was just trying to think of alternatives so his passport didn't have to get traipsed around the country. I'm sure you would do the same if you were in a similar situation.
