Hello fellow Glasto Lovers!!

I have a dilemma - iv been offered a chance to volunteer with the charity Shelter as bar staff. This will require 3 x 8 hour shifts, and paying a £250 deposit NOW!!

However...what are the ramifications if I simply did not turn up to my shifts and instead just enjoyed the whole festival? Obviously my plan would be to go along with the whole thing/ all the training etc to get a wristband, then just not show to a shift?

Is there anyway of getting caught once in the festival and then kicked out? Maybe someone with first hand knowledge who has also taken this method could advise?

Kind Regards!!

As others have said you will lose the deposit, your name is added to the blacklist which all the various charities and organisations working at Glastonbury check volunteers/workers names against. A copy of your photo id is also passed out to security to keep a watch out for you, if they locate you then you are escorted offsite.

As a person who'll be volunteering this year (litter picking) for the 4th time (and completed all of my shifts) people who use volunteering as a way to get a free ticket and then sag it off annoy the f*ck out of me. If you're not willing to do it then don't volunteer and free that space up for someone who has a decent work ethic and a moral compass that ain't skewed.

To answer your question- you'll be blacklisted from ever working again and in my opinion should be blacklisted from ever getting a ticket. Dependent on the size of your team and where you camp there is the chance you could be identified as not working your shifts and asked to leave and your wristband removed

I was speaking to the volunteer manager last week and he said every charity group has the responsibility to make up their own specific number of hours, so by not turning up you would be making someone else do extra hours on top of their own so they'd be missing out on more of the festival.

Coincidently, I'm currently researching management of volunteers at cultural events for my dissertation and would really appreciate you filling out my survey if you have volunteered before, takes 2 mins!

I worked for Shelter in 2011 and had the same dilemma, the cancellation date for the Shelter work was after the resale date, they do have a list of people who are ready to take your place so don't feel too bad but you do run the risk of maybe losing this as a way in sometime I the future

On my shifts we only had 2 people not show up and luckily they were some of the laziest people I had ever met having worked one shift with them, to be honest though its a great experience, you're doing something for charity and the festival is at least £300 cheaper!! I would go for it and make the best of the situation, the shifts mean you are forced to experience different parts of the festival which can only be a good thing!
