you don't need to do so many diff types of cardio

I just stick to the steps or the bike or cross trainer for the entire session/workout

I just do an hour steps..no messing about then today 45mins on the bike

no need to waste time and move between equipment

also - do you do any weights? should try and add some in

Will defo throw in some freeweights then! smile.png It might seem an oveer exaggeration, but this thread has inspired me not to be the chubby in the photo-especially at my first Glastonbury! So I just went to the gym and decided to give it my all - I've just completed my first ever (literally ever) 2 mile run at a total of 24 minutes. Not a great time but for me, it's a major achievement. A year ago, I HATED exercise, refused to go to the gym or even for a walk, lived on takeouts and ballooned! I started 6 months ago with 1 minute interval training where I could only manage to run for 30 seconds!

A 12 minute mile isn't actually that bad in the grand scheme of things.

I went for a quick run with the dog last night (just under a couple of miles) and averaged 9:08 minutes a mile. I'm far from a 'runner', but now consider myself to be at a reasonable level of fitness (474ft climb in first mile of said route, which makes it more interesting!)

And yes - for women it's actually even harder to 'bulk up' - to get any more than 'nicely toned' the serious body builders put a lot of effort in, so the typical worries of "don't want to look muscly" are misplaced.

And even if you start working up the weights, you're going to see where you are when you want to stop if it really did come to the point you started to "get big".

I just realised, I also assumed you were a guy - not sure why

still weights wont hurt - just lighter weights higher reps to build and tone muscle

and re 2miles 24mins..everyone starts somewhere

consistency is the key..not taking days off here and there or excuses like most people do

thats why gyms are mainly full of people who you wouldn't know go to a gym..they go then reward themselves with a cake or few pints..they then skip it when it's cold or wet and in turn make little progress

Thank you smile.png for a newbie I'm quite impressed with myself. I don't class myself as a "runner" either - I'm not small and nimble but big and clumsy and I run like a penguin! Perseverence and all that! I'm impressed with the climb - I would have rolled back down again wink.png What sort of weights should I be doing? I tried the freeweights and felt REALLY intimidated by the posers in the corner so swiftly made my exit. The gym has a lot of machines but I'm not sure which to use. Also, a really daft question but can you train yourself to run quicker? 5.3 on the treadmill is a comfortable speed for me which means I can build on time - should I be building speed as well say 5.5 for 100 calories then a drop down?

Hello! I am also tryin to get fit before Glasto, largely so my body can handle the huge amounts of walking and heavy liftin (aka the tent!). I'm relatively fit, but without much muscle so I'm doing a range of weighted classes like circuits and specific legs/arms/core classes.

I hate cardio work, much prefer resistence/weights. That said I'm tryin to get out for an hours walk over lunchtime a couple of days a week, and I've got a kettlebell DVD workout to use at home!

If you want to tone up and build lean muscle, kettlebells are AWESOME. Most gyms should have them, but they aren't too expensive to buy to use at home if you don't have access to a gym. Google kettlebell exercises and you'll find loads of exercise plans and YouTube videos to follow!

Kettlebell swings are the best exercise for all over body and core strength (this is a good YouTube demo!

).

Does seem early to get in shape BUT I have a big fundraising event I am running at the end of November which I'd also like to shape up for - sadly I am so unmotivated so thinking starting early is key!

I've lost about 2 1/2 stone since the last Glasto, but I've still got around 2 stone more to go. I did start doing the Couch to 5K over summer, but its getting harder to motivate myself to get outside now that its cold and rainy! I don't really do gyms unfortunately though.

It sounds like you've talked yourself out of it already smile.png

The hardest part of any type of exercise is actually putting your training gear on; once you get going its's great.

Outdoor winter jogging/running is far more beneficial (and enjoyable) than treadmills, just make sure that you have the correct clothing and footwear. It's a great way to get fit and loose weight smile.png

What you should do is vary your speed/time and route; go for actual time on your feet rather than speed/distance travelled, ie jog for 40 mins rather than aim to do 5 miles, and take rest days.

When jogging you should be able to hold a conversation as a rule of thumb.

You can complement the jogging with sit ups, press ups etc, again everything in moderation; quality not quantity.

I find that gyms, although nice and cosy, can be places where it's easy to stand around, be intimidated, and do nothing, plus they are expensive!

Personally I'd rather spend my money on some decent trainers, load my ipod with some top quality 'eye of the tiger' tunes and plod the streets/parks etc; works for me smile.png

Bargain smile.png but I will say that my gym (the great outdoors) is also open 24/7 and free smile.png

Can fully understand people using gyms, especially at unsociable times, but they CAN BE expensive, and you do need to be disciplined in order to maximize the benefits.

The main thing is to enjoy what you do; you know what I mean, the feeling you get after a workout - brilliant!

I think that's why I get grumpy if I don't get / miss my exercise fix smile.png

    • I thought some time back that I could see Get Down Services getting a slot in Woodsies
    • Tickets on sale when I'm abroad (I'm assuming this sells out in minutes), and the actual dates could not be worse for me work-wise. Still going to try to get tickets, of course, but god damn!
    • I'm personally confident that Slipknot will be one of the headliners next year (no insider info just lines up with them likely releasing an album soon)    Then there's the headliner that's never played the festival before which the bookers have alluded to so that's one of Blink, Foos, NIN, Nickelback and possibly Pearl Jam or even Bon Jovi    The third band I also think will be a new headliner who are being bumped up so Deftones, Offspring, Paramore Etc.    I'd love Slipknot, Foos and Paramore but realistically i'd go with Slipknot, Blink and Deftones
    • Loads of people have to listen to music they don't like all day, while at work!   Not much different.
    • Generally shorter too, I imagine. 🙂
