Hey

I'm blind without my lenses. I have glasses but they are jam jar like. (My perscription is -7.5)

Anyhow in the past I always kept my lenses in from start to finish. As I've got older and wiser I realise this is silly.

However I'm slightly concerned about taking them out whilst under the influence in a dark tent in dirty surroundings.

Anyone got any tips? I wear monthly disposable by the way :)

I have hard lenses (gas permeable), and have managed to take them out every night and soak them, and put them back in in the morning, but keep water and a bowl in tent for hand washing.

TOP TIP dont put lenses in soon after using hand gel - OUCH!

If you're used to lenses, it's also not a good idea to take them out too early, as I found that I was far more affected by the smoke, pollen etc than I realised, as my lenses act as a protective barrier - a bit like when you try to cut onions when cooking without your lenses in - you don't realise how much they protect your eyes until times like that!

I wear air optix aqua silicone hydrogel lenses and leave them in 24/7 for a week at a time with no problems.

Take some eye drops and use them regularly to keep the lenses clean and hydrated and keep yourself well hydrated and you should be fine.

I use alcohol hand gel to clean my hands but I make sure they are dry before changing lenses. Again, no problems.

I use daily disposables with wet wipes to clean my hands. But like other people say make sure hands are dry before putting lenses in.

A quick warning on dailies, because the days can be long and dailies dry out change them or go back to glasses before headliners. Trust me having left my lenses in for more than 12 hours and scratched my cornea taking them out its not something you want to do at a festival.

I have monthlys too, they dont make my prescription in dailies and these dont even correct my vision properly! ha.

So as I hate glasses what I do to change them is rub my hands with a wet wipe, use alcohol soap stuff (also had this shit in my eyes) and then rinse with water, this can all be done in your tent. i do also try to clean my hands with soap and water when heading back to the tent. Im the only driver you see, if i cant see we're all buggered!

On dailys for now but have been on monthlys in the past, make sure you clean your hands all the time, I have to say though there have been a few nights that i have been to out it to try and take them out so have just slept in them, took them out in the morning give my eye a good bath, givve the lenses a good wash and back in they go.

I wear contacts too. Like everyone else has said, just make sure you have a good light and clean hands. Taking some eyedrops and possibly some Optrex just in case couldn't hurt either.

One thing I will say is don't sleep in them! Until very recently I had monthly contacts that you could sleep in, thought they were great until they gave me a serious eye infection meaning I haven't been able to wear contacts for a month and have had to take 10 eye drops a day. <_< It has been an absolute bitch and not worth it at all!

During my exciting adventure to Moorfields A&E, I was told that they strongly recommend against ever sleeping in lenses, even the 24 hr ones, as it massively increases the risk of eye infections (wish my optician had mentioned that, but hey ho, that'll learn me).

Well they would say that, wouldn't they ? Millions of people wear lenses 24/7 and don't get an infection.

The regulatory requirements for contact lenses are very stringent and they have to satisfy very strict safety laws.

You get an eye infection (you didn't state which, btw) through poor eye and hand hygiene i.e contact conjunctivitis.

Against a control of someone who doesn't use contact lenses, anyone who does use contact lenses has an increased

risk of infection due to the fact that they are touching their eyes more frequently!

Using lenses that stay in 24/7 reduces the amount of eye/hand contact and could actually reduce the risk of infection.

Not helpful at the timescales we're talking -- but like pretty much everyone who's had it, I really, really recommend laser eye surgery. I had it done - previous to that I wore glasses. My ex had it done - she was on daily disposables, and worked out that not buying the contacts would pay for the surgery in 2 years.

The earlier in life you get it done, the better value it is, because at a certain age your eyesight will deteriorate regardless.

Like several other here I use daily disposables..

I take out my two blister packs of lenses for the day and put them in my pocket. I then go and find a tap and wash my hands thoroughly with a squirty bottle of carex anti-bacterial soap that I bring with me. Then I find the nearest vehicle mirror I can and put my contacts in. :D

When I come to take them out I try and give my hands a good rinse at some point and then maybe a squirt of alchohol handgel if I'm back at the tent when I remove them.

I also take a bottle of eye drops with me and use them several times before, during and after having lenses in. I don't drink though so imagine its a lot harder being as well behaved when you're a bit squiffy.. Its worth it though, my friend got a detached retina from poor hygene and lenses..

I also use daily disposables.

I'm already packing a brew up kit to boil water for my morning cuppa, so a small bowl and wash kit are also taken so I can put them in with clean hands.

The disposable pipette eye drops are also good (and good for anyone that gets something in their eye!)

Also a Small Mirror on some string. That string is long enough so that the mirror hangs down over the enterence to my tent inner. I do up the door, I then have a stable eye level (well, when sitting in the porch) mirror to look into when putting them in. When done, I flip the mirror over one of the ties between the tent inner and outer (and so it is then safely out of the way).

Wow -7.5!! That's even blinder than me at -6.75!

I now wear the continuous 24/7 monthly lenses and have done for the past 2 years and I LOVE them, especially at Glasto. I find them to be much more comfortable than normal lenses and the fact that I don't wake up blind in the morning then have to faff about with all the cleaning etc is a godsend even when I'm at home. They are amazing and I no longer get infections like I used to. I would wholeheartedly recommend them from my experience.

I used to wear monthly lenses that I took out every day and when I was at Glasto I just made sure that my hands were really clean, had my solution, lens case etc and used them as normal.

I wear contacts but will be reverting back to my glasses for the festival. Cant be doing with all the messing about taking them out and putting them in,would drop the things in the tent anyway. I wore glasses last year and as it was so dusty my eyes were streaming. The thought of getting the dust behind the lens seems as tho it might be painful.

Hmm, maybe we should start a visually impaired meet :-) I'm -8.5 on both eyes with .25 of astigmatism in both eyes but on different axis. I have a motor home for Glasto, but camp at Green Man and other festivals. Never found it a problem to pop them in before leaving the tent.

I'll just echo what everyone else said. Impeccable hand hygiene, and that includes under the nails. My feeling is if you are pissed enough to think you will have problems taking out your lenses you're better off sleeping in them for a while. Just make sure to take them out for a couple of hours the next morning so your eyes have a chance to recover. That also gives you a chance to disinfect them.

I've worn lenses for over 30 years, went through just about everything from Gas permeable to my current silicon based lenses. Never had a problem (knocks vigorously on wood) My only issue now is that I'm starting to get presbyopia due to old age. Oh the irony of being ridiculously near sited, then losing the ability to focus close.

    • It was awful during Father John Misty and I was close to the front. People just shouting and laughing their f-ing heads off about nothing in particular and being louder than the bloody stage.
    • Other things I noted yesterday, away from the obvious…   Positives: - an extra water point towards the back left of the main stages has appeared, which I believe is new for this year (and was much needed) - handing out free ponchos was a good touch  - caroline were fantastic. I’d never been in the Auditori Rockdelux before, it’s a wonderful venue and a great venue if you fancy a more chilled out environment  Negatives: - the talkers. I know it’s always bad here (and most festivals nowadays) but f**k me people wouldn’t shut up yesterday. I wonder if it was partly as a result of people being at artists they had little interest in (due to rain limiting their options), although it wasn’t great during blood orange. We’ll be making an effort to get a spot nearer the front for anyone we particularly care about over the weekend  - not enough staff around (and the ones that are there are largely useless). Most other festivals have them everywhere and are happy to help
