I'm with Steve P - I don't understand why being married should entitle someone to a "gift" - the idea that it's not taking out of the pot is just bonkers.

We're getting married next year and intended it to be a small affair but it's fast becoming the blow out party tony referred to. And why not - we only plan on doing it once and what better way to start than surrounded by family and friends...and booze? We could have stuck with the keep it small plan but either way wouldn't have made any difference to why we're doing it. By then we'll have a child which as tony also says I think will have a much more fundamental difference to our relationship than marriage will.
