A wedding is a public declaration of your union. You don't have to sign the marriage register to do that. As soon as you sign the register, you have legal responsibilities. I'd much rather be a responsible partner/father because it's the right thing to do, not because I'm required to by law.

When I got married we did the ceremony which was the commitment part and then we made the marriage "lawful" to gain the automatic rights married couples share.

You said it was a "requirement under law". If you had said it was a "requirement under law in order to automatically gain the rights of married couples", then that would have been more clear, as well as being blindingly obvious.

This post has driven me mad. We keep being told we're in the middle of the worst recession since the war so why exactly are we handing out this "gift"? We pay taxes to provide essential services for the country and to help out those less fortunate than ourselves. How can it possibly be justified that the government are giving this out totally arbitrary tax break? You're right that I may not be paing any more taxes for it, but it means that something else must have been cut for it to be handed out. With the economy the way it is, I'm appauled that rather than trying to help people that are in real financial need then government are doing this instead.
