Anyone who wants to hold being a member of the Hitler Youth against a German male of a certain age is very much ignorant of the nature of its membership. Nearly everyone under a certain age during the Third Reich was in some way connected to the Hitler Youth and this grew in its later years.

Even Hans Scholl was at one time a member (for those that don't know, Hans Scholl was a member of the White Rose resistance group who was beheaded along with his sister Sophie for distributing leaflets in Munich, which is the subject of a very good German film called Die Weisse Rose. Incidentally, they were tried by the People's Court [used for Nazi show trials in the main] under Roland Freisler who also conducted the trials of the July 20th plotters, Fleiser himself was later killed outside the court during an air-raid when a big piece of stone fell on him and someone allegedly that it was 'gods justice' [or verdict - can’t remember], but I digress).

You could also argue that adult membership of the Nazi party from as early as the late 1920's was not necessarily an indication of beliefs given the number who joined as a means of social or financial advancement.
