This is wrong. They would not. Simply because significantly fewer people go to the festival now that the superfence is up. I think if every single person at the festival turned up for their performance, then they'd still fail to beat the record. Which I think is Rolf Harris, oddly.

If it were the case that U2 wouldn't play without "the claw", then I'd have to question any band not willing to just turn up with their instruments and let their music do the talking, instead needing a stageshow to divert attention/add a wow factor to a performance.

Although U2 at Glasto could be a hugely positive and celebratory event, by the sounds of the majority on here not a welcome one. Strange that.

I've been reading Neil's forums for 6 years and havent seen this kind of spiteful and small minded nonsense in such volumes before. Im not diggin out the post but last year I said on eFests that theres a lot of jealous BS spouted by the UK media about Bono. Basically that he is knocked for trying to make a difference. He is not from England. We do things differently over here!

I think people here have been drinking deep at this well of negativity... pity, cuz U2 are a superb outfit that would bring anthem after anthem to that Pyramid.

Maybe give it a miss lads. Let the masses here sing along to "Yellow" like every other year.

I have followed this post from the start but have yet to post so here are my thoughts for what they are worth (I am probably going to get shot down judging by some of the strong opinions on here).

U2 I would like to point out from the outset are not my favourite band by a long shot.

However they have produced my Dad's favourite song and the song that he has requested be played at his funeral, grim I know, but there you go.

Anyway when I think back on the amount of amazing hits they have had I can't see how it wouldn't be a good show on the Pyramid? A lot of people don't think Liam Gallagher is a saint but he still puts on a really good show when Oasis are playing together is that not agreed upon?

I think if we analsyed each and every big celebrity/popstar/person in the spotlight there surely have to be much worse people than Bono?! He has after all done some good for the world. And I guess what people don't like is that he preaches a lot about everything but is this not him using his status in an effective manner?

This thread has really shocked me as I did not expect that someone with such worldwide popularity could encounter such criticism.

At first when I heard they might be playing I was really quite excited at the prospects of hearing all their hits on the Pyramid with my Dad in situ. However now due to some of the people on here I am not sure I will be anywhere near there at all.

I guess it is now a case for me to decide. I really do think some people on here are too big for their own boots in terms of their comments but it has had an effect on whether I go see them or not.

If the eavis' did listen to everyone on here we'd have a rather different glastonbury..there would be no U2, Coldplay, Keene etc. Or anyone who's actually sold lots of records cos they're 'sell outs'..We would have Elbow, Doves, Flaming lips and Arcade fire all day, (which is not everyones dream) and other less know acts that satisfies their own pocket of friends down the pub (nick cave? - fantastic but really surprised no one watched him last year?). Oh and the odd 'sexy' pop act to w*nk into their cider pints, (see the pathetic old man comments about 'the sugar babes' and 'girls aloud'). This forum is not representative of the whole Glastonbury audience. Everyone said last year that no one would watch The Script - people said they would throw piss - when actually the field was totally packed and they were a success. Why? because lots of other people from different walks of life have bought and enjoyed listening to their music.

I love this forum, (thank you Neil) but there's a vile snobbish elitist attitude to music on here sometimes (see st00ka "Nah you either hate them or you are a moron") and frankly some f**king stupid ignorance ( see "Is that a typo? Shouldn't that read 80 people? It'll be the biggest mass dispersal from the main stage")

Not a huge fan but if U2 played on the 40th anniversary it would be a huge event (and yes - one of the biggest events the festival has seen) and many many many people would enjoy watching them, (live and on t.v.) which would give the festival a huge boost and also help with the charities, (combine this with bono's added help with these charities). If the idea of so many other people enjoying themselves to something you don't personally like is such a horrible idea to you - f**k off..

No it wouldn't. For reasons already stated - the superfence going up will ensure that previous biggest attendences won't ever be beaten without significant upping of the capacity.

It does. Because writing "biggest event" is utterly meaningless and unquanitifiable hyperbole.

Meet the next set of fanboys. Same as the last set of fan boys. Saying how their preferred act is going to be the biggest, bestest thing to happen to Glasto like ever. U2 this year, The Boss last year. Here we go again.

by the way, just to clarify...i still think it's unlikely they are playing. I just noticed the gap in the dates and wanted to mention it as a possibility, esp since it had been previously assumed that they were booked for the NY/New Jersey Meadowlands over Glasto weekend.

I'd say it's a 15% chance. they've seen that Bruce did it last year, and maybe they reckon "all right...we'll do it"

or they may have just taken 6 days out because they reckon Ireland will have qualified for WC by beating France next month, and wanted a few days in S. Africa come late june, because they figure ROI will make it out of their group and so they want to be there in person to watch them beat England on penalties in the QF...

I would also like to express my objections to U2 being the biggest event to occur at Glastonbury. Don't get me wrong I'm not slagging off U2 here, in fact there was a period in my life when they were my favourite band (that was 20 years ago). However these days from a personal perspective them playing would probably rank lower than the massive dump I did on the Sunday morning in the Pennards Hill long drop in 2003.
