This debate started with people saying how bad things were in 2004.

It is not the same as debating whether or not a particular group is on, that is musical taste, this is about the nature of the festival, if in future years all home countries were in the competition would all games be shown, and if the licence wont cover music before friday why football.

If you want to wtch a football match go to a football stadium.

Fishing is the most popular participation sport why not have a fishing pond, as I said before Eastenders is very popular, show that, I like walking, can I wonder through the festival for hours waering walking boots and carring a back pack, stopping here and there for a drink?.........actualy yes I can do that last one.

Football creates passions, that is its glory and its problem, when you are part of a football crowd everybody scfreaming and chanting together is uplifting and makes you feel part of something. If you are not part of that crowd the same inocnet actions are intimidating and you must admit that there is some reason for that, football has a bad reputation for violence which may be exagerated but is not completely unwarrented. If you then get one or two twats from a crowd of thousands going way too far it seems as if the whole crowd may be erupting.

I've seen a few nasty incidents in 20 years of going to Glasto, though in all honesty I never came across any aggro after either of the games in 1996 or 2004. The common denominators in all the trouble I have seen? Alcohol and young men. Whether you showed football on the big screen or ice-dancing, get young men pissed and there will always be a small minority that turn into nasty dickheads. And I doubt banning alcohol will ever be an option anyone wants to seriously consider.

I do find it odd that people think only nice people go to Glasto - it's sad but a few nasty violent racists also buy tickets too; the festival reflects society at large, even if it filters it so less of the w*nkers are represented than back in the real world...

Well that's quite well put - it goes some way to explaining why everyone in this thread who doesn't like football seems to have seen football related trouble at Glastonbury, while no-one who likes football seems to have done.

I was a big football fan in my youth, went off it in the 90's, but somehow drifted back to it and i do remember seeing crowds of football supporters very differently when I wasnt one of them.

What pulled me back to football though, was partially the amazing atmosphere of Euro 96. In Birmingham we had Scortland, Switzerland, and Holland. England were in that group but playing all their games at Wembley. It was great fun being out in Birmingham during that time and meeting football fans from all over the place. It was also the first time I started to see black people with the flag of St George painted on their faces. It felt like an incredible, inclusive, coming together of people.

Now I enjoy following Villa all over the country because I enjoy seeing different parts of the country, and meeting fans of other clubs, finding out what they love about their club, what gets them down. and yes, having a shared moan about the overpaid prima donnas who are wrecking our game! My view of football is around people coming together, which isn't the way people outside football see it, and unfortunately, not how everyone who likes football sees it either.

Glastonbury is one of my favourite places to watch football (only beaten, of course, by Villa Park itself) because the type of people who are attracted to Glastonbury and like football, tend to be the type of people who see football the same way as I do, as a shared experience.

From what some people on here have said, there could be a minority of football knobs at Glastonbury - but they are probably the same ones who pile straight through you without so much as an "excuse me" to get to the front for their favourite band - knobs are knobs really - football is just an excuse - take it away and they'll find another one.

Why have you decided to only mention the minority of reports of the 2004 aftermath - i.e. the negative ones?

Why don't you read through the thread again, and realise that generally, it was an excellent FRIENDLY atmosphere? Very much inkeeping with the Glasto atmosphere.

Sure - there were a few w**kers (not that I saw any but I think Paul mentioned a few incidents he saw), but mainly, that evening conjured up some really good memories. People were happy, there was plenty of banter - it was great. Can't imagine how it would have been if we'd have won!!

If you're going to show the football, show all the football somewhere, not just England games. I'd probably watch some, dunno. I do worry that Id sit in front of the screen for too long and miss all the other things Glastonbury has to iffer though. I guess that's my natural laziness.

I'vr got to be honest, if I were, for example Spanish and England played and beat Spain, I'm not sure my Glastonbury would be that pleasant and relaxing. I can imagine some unpleasant scenes.

I can perfectly understand lots of people's views on why showing England games is a good thing, I don't agree with all of them, but I can see where they're coming from though. If one shown, and I suspect it's likely, I just hope a) england win and it's against a country with no food stalls and punters at Glastonbury. Just for a more pleasant experience for everyone.
