The final tent thread

Right, this may not work, but I'm going to try anyway.

Basically, a lot of people have been asking if certain tents are going to be fit the Glasto purpose. Shall we compress these?

Anyone who has used a tent at a festival before and it has served them well could list it here, maybe with a link as well (if you're unemployed like me).

and

If anyone wants to ask if a tent is suitable, ask on this thread and I'm sure one very kind Efestivaler(?) will try and help you.

Here goes; I have a Vango Beta 250 and seeing as it's brand new and this is my first Glasto I have no idea if it is good enough :( but I gathered from last years posts it was a good aquisition.

Happy Glasto'ing

basic tent buying tips!!

don't go for single skin tents - they are useless in the rain.

look for hydrostatic head of 2000 or more, for a tent that is waterproof enough to stand up to most british weather.

a small porch to keep your muddy boots in is always handy.

check the weight of the tent, as you'll have to carry it a fair way at glasto - i aim for less than 6kg for a 2/3 man tent.

do you know what i meant by a 'head' of water?

its a specific measurement of water pressure above a fixed reference point.

so a hydro (water) static (still) head is a measurement of the pressure of still water above a fixed reference point.

the test they use to determine hydrostatic head rating is to take a plastic tube, mount it vertically and fix a piece of the fabric they want to test stretched over the bottom end of the tube.

they then gradually fill the tube with water until the pressure forces droplets through the threads of the fabric.

therefore a tent with a 2000mm hydrostatic head can withstand the pressure of 2 metres of water before it loses its waterproofedness (is that a word?)

i hope you can understand that :D

We have a Khyam quick erect tent (sleeps 6 I think), goes up in about 5 minutes and down in a similar time. We bought it as you can stand up in the bedrooms and get dressed. Good hydrostatic head rate (although I forget what it was), and has lasted 5 or 6 festivals - should be going for a long time to come!

Really recommend them.

I don't think you can have a thread to end all threads on anything really, especially not tents. People will want to ask specific questions for their needs, and I'd encourage people to start a new thread for their question.

I always pit my bid in when its got 10 or so seconds to go.

its not nice but that's the only way to win these days.

if you bid early it just informs other potential buyers that they've got competition.

if it worked like a real-life auction you'd bid until you were the only one left then it would end,

with a fixed length auction you've got to get a snipe in at the last moment to even be in with a chance.

    • I think my party got pretty lucky last night, at least compared to some of the horror stories over on Reddit. I was very impressed with Father John Misty in particular.   Perhaps my view would be different if I were a big Massive Attack fan or whatever, but right now my feeling is that if it's not safe for the shows to go ahead... then it's not safe for the shows to go ahead. I'd much rather they were cautious than roll the dice when it comes to something like that.    Here's hoping everyone has a better day today.
    • It was awful during Father John Misty and I was close to the front. People just shouting and laughing their f-ing heads off about nothing in particular and being louder than the bloody stage.
    • Other things I noted yesterday, away from the obvious…   Positives: - an extra water point towards the back left of the main stages has appeared, which I believe is new for this year (and was much needed) - handing out free ponchos was a good touch  - caroline were fantastic. I’d never been in the Auditori Rockdelux before, it’s a wonderful venue and a great venue if you fancy a more chilled out environment  Negatives: - the talkers. I know it’s always bad here (and most festivals nowadays) but f**k me people wouldn’t shut up yesterday. I wonder if it was partly as a result of people being at artists they had little interest in (due to rain limiting their options), although it wasn’t great during blood orange. We’ll be making an effort to get a spot nearer the front for anyone we particularly care about over the weekend  - not enough staff around (and the ones that are there are largely useless). Most other festivals have them everywhere and are happy to help
