im trying to do alot of forward planning this year (I quite enjoy it.. all the early buying of hand sanitizer and mini toothpastes.. geek!) and I am carefully considering what I should take to sleep on. Each time ive camped with only a camp mat, ive never got a refreshing sleep because im constantly rolling about all night trying to get comfy. Last year I got a great sleep on a small inflatable bed, I cant really take one this year because I am going by coach and am trying to pack as lightly as possbile. Ive thought about inflatable mats, are they any better than yours standard mat? are there any inflatable beds in a light version?

any past experiences or advice is much appreciated!

Have a great one

I take an airbed, but they weigh at least 2kg. :P Am using a Coleman Comfort Bed at the moment.

You could take one of those lilo things, although they are quite thin and might develop a puncture. You could probably take a spare with you. Not sure how good they are for sleeping on, although I've read of others on here using them as such.

You can also get those sectioned inflatable backpackers beds, 0.85kg

I think I might take an inflatable sofa with me this year, or perhaps one of those convertible sofa beds!

Last year we invested in self-inflating roll mats and it was the best £30 we ever spent! very comfy and keep the cold from coming through from the ground! They aren't much bigger than a traditional roll mat either which is even better!!

Get one of these, they are ace!!

How do these inflatable mattresses compare to airbeds? That one linked above is only 3cm thick? Not much cushioning/give possible there for side sleepers.

The Gelert 5cm is ~2kg, so a similar weight to an airbed.

I got one of these...

http://cgi.ebay.com.my/NEW-SPORTURA-SELF-I...emZ310126360766

except i bought mine for £17 in costco.

I havent slept on it but i did lie on it watching the apprentice last week and its comfy. :P

I sleep on my front and find that full size (Single) airbeds are just too narrow for me to get comfy...this is ideal cos im not carrying a bloody double airbed just for me...

So if you wanted one of these, get someone to pick one from costco and DONT get it off e-bay!!

**Edit** Let me just point out it has a thicker "pillow" bit too which is handy

I can't recommend a proper self inflating mattress highly enough...

I have one of These and not only is it infintely more comfortable and portable than an inflatable airbed, but it's much warmer as it actually insulates you from the ground below whereas I find air beds quite cold...it'll be the best 30-40 quid you ever spend and can be used for years!

Any one used one of these:

To go in my new Quechua Base Seconds (if/when I get it), with a throw over it, fairy lights, and lots of beers for camp luxury! :D

There are a couple of other types of sofa-beds, but they need have a section inflated/deflated to convert from bed to sofa; too much hassle! :D

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
