Campsite flagpole lighting - advice please

It's all very well having a flagpole at your encampment but without decent lighting you will struggle to find it at night.

At Wychwood I encountered a group with a stunning 10 metre flagpole with LED lights flashing all the way to the top. So I went and asked them how they did it.

Their answer was a 12 volt car battery, running through an inverter to power 240 volt light strings.

But I'm confused as most 240 volt light strings have a transformer that knocks down the 240 volt input to somewhere around 12 volts.

Surely you loose power if you start with 12 volts, invert it up to 240v and then transform it down back to 12v.

So I'm wondering if anyone else has suggestions to really light a 10 metre flagpole up well? I'm happy to invest in a separate 12 volt car battery to drive things.

Anyone know of people selling good 12 volt LED lighting strings or any other suggestions.

I've got three weeks as I want to shine out at Glasto and find my way home.

We have a 8 m flagpole and use solar powered led lights that can flash or stay on permanent. They come on automatically at night and cost less than a tenner. They look ace at night too. Think we got them from home and bargain

The solar lights are brillant, we have used a string for years. I was typing as the above answer appeared. Believe ours came from Amazon. Same detail as above. Everyone else uses them for navigation as well.

Hello grumpy. I can't answer your questions as I haven't got a clue about those things. Just to say I saw those two flagpoles lite up at Wychwood and agree that they were more than impressive. I'm kind of mulling over getting the same sort of thing so will be watching this thread avidly.

    • TOP 10 acts (top 5 in bold😞   Blood Orange (ciutat)   Guitarricadelafuente   Oklou - Looks like I'm capable of enjoying music in the rain after all, just not the whole night.   Rilo Kiley   The Cure   Jade   Depresión Sonora   Gelli Haha (Parc del Forum) - Her music never really clicked with me. Until I saw her live.   MARINA   Six Sex (ciutat) - I was shocked how supersmall the venue was and that almost everyone (except for me) knew every word of every song (including the ones that were released this weekend!).   Honorable mention:   Ashnikko - missed the first 15 minutes (because of Gelli Haha) and I'm not really a fan of her music, but the show was an absolute blast.
    • Totally agree about PinkPantheress stage choice. 'Luckily' for me, one of my main targets, fakemink, was absolutely awful, meaning that I left early and was in a surprisingly good spot at Cupra before it got totally packed.
    • As many said before, not my favourite Primavera. sh*tty weather is something I'm not really used to when enjoying music. Poor communication (more than 1 hour long radio silence during the worst rain) didn't help, but the main problem was me. I decided to leave the venue after things seemed to be getting back to normal. Massive Attack were supposed to play again (with Hymn of the Big Wheel back on the setlist!) as were all other artists on the smaller stages (including Fcukers with one my favourite albums of the year). FOMO was at an all-time high. However, after 4 hours in the rain, I had to admit to myself that I'm not cut out for this. I wasn't even that soaked (water-proof jacket worked). I was just fed up with the rain, wind and cold and wasn't able to enjoy music anymore.   Also, they should stop ignoring the growth of some artists between signing them up and their actual performance. Both PinkPantheress and Ninajirachi sets were ruined for me by completely inadequate stage choice.   However, I felt very much the same way after the 2022 edition and have thoroughly enjoyed all subsequent editions. So I'm still buying early bird tickets for 2027 and hoping this was a hiccup not the start of a downward trend.
    • I will definitely be buying a 2027 early bird pass, partially because of the priority reservation privileges for the Ciutat sets. Hopefully the organization will take action to improve upon this year's failings. Because I thought the free water options and sound quality were an improvement over last year, so clearly they can actually implement positive changes.   I also hope all the douchebag chompers get in the sea, cause I was more bothered by them than in the past few years.   Highlights: The Cure, Ninajirachi, Knocked Loose, Current 93, Blood Orange.
    • Similar feelings to a few others on here. Not my personal favourite edition but a long way from giving up on it. Felt overcrowded at times and there are just too many people there that don't seem to like music that much! Hardly went to main stages which was the plan. Highlights Ralphie Choo, rusowsky, Gorillaz, Geese, Gelli Haha, The Sophs, PinkPantheress, Dijon. Accommodation booked for next year. Thanks for your company and comments over the past year.
