Visiting the Tor

I'm travelling by coach but I've always wanted to go up the Tor. Has anyone done this during the festival? Is it far to walk? I obviously can't drive or go before I get to the festival so I'm just wondering if it's possible. I'd like to go on Wednesday as we're arriving just before the gates open so we have a whole day ahead of us.

I'm trying to look at Google Maps but it's hard to tell and it obviously doesn't have the changes to the routes around the festival, although I'm not sure if that affects pedestrians?

Any idea?

Edit: Google says it's a two hour walk from Worthy Farm to Glastonbury Tor. Surely not? It doesn't look that far away!

The Tor is about 7 miles from Pilton, on the edge of Glastonbury. You really wouldn't be advised to walk down the A361 at any time, during Weds may be a bad idea due to traffic as all you lovely people go to site. Save it for a day when you can park nearby and walk up at leisure.

We did it last year but we stayed in the Highwayman Inn in Shepton on the Tuesday and went during the day. We got a taxi there (didn't want to leave packed up car parked up by the Tor) and walked into Glastonbury town after for a few drinks then got a taxi back.

Personally think it's the best way to do it means you don't miss any of the festival and avoid traffic issues. Was definitely worth it and was a lovely way to start the festival.I booked up the accommodation the day before tix went on sale in October, as it was free cancellation and you didn't need to pay till your stay.

That sounds really nice but unfortunately we're going by coach during the night so we're arriving 7:30am on Wednesday. I suppose taxis are an option but I don't want to be the pain in the arse trying to get out of the festival while so many people are trying to get in!

If you want to take your chances on the bus there is a service run by Frome Minibuses no 669 from Shepton Mallet to Street which takes in the festival site. There are bus stops near the Festival Coach station (PGC) and Stickleball Lane (PGD and West Campervans) on the A361.

No idea of the cost and not a great number of buses but details of the times can be found here

Regard Pilton The Crown as your departure time for the Tor. Getting back will be simple albeit lengthy!

    • Primavera refunding day tickets which are probably a negligible percentage of attendees yesterday.
    • Thursday day tickets being refunded. Fair play.
    • I’ve had a good sleep and I feel weirdly zen about the whole thing.   My first Primavera, so not the greatest first impression. I guess today couldn’t be any worse, right?   Thoroughly enjoyed Men I Trust and Geese. Cupra is a beautiful stage and the crowd seemed fun, friendly and engaged.   I think it probably could have gone even worse, considering how dangerous the crowding felt at times.   Anyway, we go again.
    • Brighton centre is a weird old venue for the Mary Wallopers - a great band, a really good live spectacle, and its a saturday night as well which sets it all up - but its at the bloody Centre? a charmless nonsense of a conference centre? Brighton dome is a ten min walk away and is so much nicer a place to see bands its ridiculous!    ah well, i'll probably mosy along anyways . . .
    • So bad honestly. I get that bad weather happens but their communication was non existent. When you're managing crowds of tens of thousands of people, it's just not good enough. I left when Massive Attack was cancelled (the first time) and it genuinely did feel unsafe trying to get out. No one knew what was going on, people still sitting in the ground when there were hoards of people trying to leave, no crowd management at all...   I've been to PS enough times to know sometimes you need to just roll with it but this was way worse than "the bar queue was 30 minutes long".    Today will be better but still feel super disappointed.
