The Fall Conundrum

I thought I liked Beirut, but the more records they make, the more ambivalent I become, and, listening to the new one, I keep wishing they could just add some meat. So, while they were a big attraction to me for my first EOTR years ago, before they withdrew, I'm no longer all that bothered.

The alternative is the Fall. I don't like the Fall, never have. Don't dislike 'em either, they just do nothing for me. My problem is that right from the start, Friday will be brilliant, up until the big boys come on, when I will be happy to have a sit and a warm by the fire.

Trouble is my mate loves the Fall, and as I am not bothered about the opposition, I will feel a duty to support him in reliving his distant youth. So I need to familiarise myself with their shit. Anyone have a playlist of songs that the genius Mancunian might play so I cam learn 'em and growl along?

I am aiming to see the Fall for the first time at EOTR. I always hated them when John Peel used to play them every 15 minutes back in the late 80s, but have slowly come to like more of their songs over time, not that I expect to hear any of them played live. Having read The Fallen (a fascinating book, even for someone who doesn't progess to be much of a fan) I'm intrigued to see how they shape up at a festival like EOTR. Whether I stay to see the whole set remains to be seen.

I (Guy) have somehow got into the habit of seeing The Fall at least once a year for the last 5 or 6 years, and have really enjoyed them each time. Last year's set at Summer Sundae was mighty. So much so that it scared my daughter and she had to be taken out of the hall. I'd just have a quick listen to the last couple of albums (which are pretty good). Having said that, I'm prbably going to go to see Beirut with the kids, while Fall fan Clare goes and grabs a space at the front.
