Idea to reduce waste

How about, if you stay and help clean up on Monday you get in a list for pre-ticket sales for the next year - i.e. you get to bag a ticket the day before the main tickets go on sale?

In fact, with a workforce of say 5,000, you could implement a pretty useful "Search for stuff that's still in a fit state" team hunting for everything from usable tents, to chairs, to tent pegs, and then set up a second hand stall selling these at next year's glasto..

Organisation by those who are already volunteering to litterpick (who have past experience)- Work in teams with trusted team leaders to ensure people are doing a real job, work from midday Monday to 8pm?

It doesn't resolve the discarding issue in the first place, but implements a strategy to deal with it cheaply and effectively..

Costs nothing, cleans stuff, helps recycle, and even makes money.. what's not to love (apart from the fact it would be slightly more difficult to get tickets next year for those not contributing?)

Thoughts? Let the brainstorming begin..

What about those who are unable to stay on Monday but may spend the whole weekend ensuring they've cleaned up after themselves/remove all tents etc? I know teachers who come who have to leave by the end on Sunday and one friend gets up at 5am on Monday morning and goes into work! (Via home for a shower!) Consideration of traffic would also need to be considered - potentially it could help to prevent 'peak' times though!

Great idea, but aside from the difficulties in operating it, I don't think it's something that Michael would consider doing.

I believe it's the case (I might be wrong) that he doesn't want to give the people who came this year any sort of preferential treatment in getting tickets for the next year. Doing something like that makes the festival a closed thing to some extent, rather than equally open to all.

Neil, the volunteers already get free tickets, so this is just a lesser version of that..

I realise that, but it's still (say) 5,000 more people who would have privileged access (in the same way that all staff & performers do already [tho I realise that some of the workers might not see it as a privilege but as work]), making fewer tickets generally available.

Maybe he would go for it - but my own idea is that he wouldn't.

brilliant idea! the 5,000 people split into 20 groups would clear a massive chunk of the crap that gets left behind very quickly.

i'd be up for it if you were guaranteed a ticket for the following year, wouldnt be so sure if you were only given a chance of getting one!

the extra people on site on the monday would also partly solve the problem of the ammount of food that goes to waste from the traders on the sunday/monday

the only downsides i can think of are the weather on the monday(cant see how they'd be able to make volunteers stay if it was battering down)

would it mean changes had to be made to the licensing laws? the license has been granted for a few years now i think.

and above all it would probably make people more likely to leave more shit behind, knowing that somebody who has a ticket for the following year would have to clean it up!

i'd imagine that the cost of ppe for volunteers would also be a major factor in something like this!

They do NOT get free tickets!!! They have to work 24 HOURS for a ticket. That is classed as payment in kind.

The SIA class a volunteer as someone that works at a festival, but does not see the entertainment. Soon that will be par for the course..

End of the day these folk are working hard for their ticket in

I don't think the early bird ticket option would be practical either. They'd have to hire another special team to keep track of these 'helpers', then to have to deal with another bunch of people who didn't really help much but want to cash in on the deal as well etc..

Some ideas to enforce the whole 'pick up as you go along' would be nice. Especially in front of the stages.

Shit idea as already said, loads of people will make sure they leave no trace of their own accord but have to go work/not having to pick other peoples shit after them. Its not really eradicating the problem, its just getting a bigger work force to clear that crap up after isn't it surely?
