Ssschhlopppp, Ssschhlopppp, Ssschhlopppp, Ssschhlopppp.

There is ONLY one place on earth that sounds like this, only one festival where this sound can put a smile on your face, only one particular clay bowl with an 11km perimeter where you can proudly point out mud on a rucksack to fellow campers and be able to state what year is became attached to it, only one crazy place where you can stand there and compare notes with other mad fools discussing and trying to predict what level of mud will occur by how much and what type of rain falls from the sky after years of practise and experience!

Just listening to the beginning of the Julien Temple film gives me the warm and fuzzies.

There really is NOTHING quite like Glastonbury Mud I even own a mug made from the stuff! :P

Yes it can be bloody horrible stuff at times, but learn to love it and embrace it, figure out how to do and then perfect the Glastonbury Mud Shuffle, hope for more wet rain or a blast of warm sunshine to either keep the mud/clay flowing so you can move though it or dry it up tout suite so you can walk on top of it and not get stuck any longer.

Years of practice and tolerance can help but once you have experienced the wonderful beauty that is the clay that makes up the bulk of the soil under your feet, you are a changed person. You are strong, you CAN get through this, you WILL get through it, you wont let a little bit of mud ruin your week.

The mud wont kill you, it might knacker you out for a bit and you might not be able to sit down as much as your would like, but never give up. Keep smiling and laughing. The festival will still be the greatest place on the planet at every moment.

You dont 'go' to Glastonbury...you 'survive' it!

BRING IT ON! There is NO such thing as a wet festival - just inappropriate clothing my friends.

I'm still only packing my sundresses btw! B)

NFRNFC and all that jazz ;)

I actually sought out wet patches last year and was a very happy bunny squelching in the mud under the shelter that had the water dripping from the roof covered in salad leaves in the Greenpeace Field.

I dont deny I want a warm and sunny fest like everyone else but last year was a bloody rare event and we were very very lucky indeed.

Is it a crime to like clay? I did study geology and hence have a fair appreciation of the stuff.

If there's just one worry...its a repeat of 97...horrid horrid horrid.

7.52pm BBC 1 this Sunday...we will know our fortunes then people. I'm not looking at a forecast til the nice weatherman on Countryfile tells me what I need to pack :D

I've been through a few mud years. Two were bad but I didn't really care that much. Then came 2007 and that very nearly destroyed me.That's not a joke - I actually still feel mentally scarred by it. I stood there at the time thinking about the Somme etc and how people fought for years in conditions like this and couldn't quite comprehend it all.

This year I'm going with Lucy's frame of mind and a pair of waiders. I am going to enjoy it regardless. It is at the end of the day only mud and not acid. As long as you've got the right kit it's not the end of the world.

I reckon they should have a siren which goes off when it starts raining to inform everyone to stay completely still. The siren then goes off to indicate to us we can carry on moving again when the ground is dry enough for us to wonder about without creating that Mud stuff.

Could only work in light showers though I guess :)

Heard is gonna be bad weather hitting glastonbury folks. having been on a few years of bad weather i'd advise those of you who are not used to bad weather to give it a miss. If you done history at school or seen any old war movies then its like being in the trenches in the first world war only with a wee bit of jive to listen to. Up to your nuts ( or HooHoo for that matter ) in mud is not going to be for some of you. Especialy those of you who like wearing fancy clothes and putting wax in your hair or whatever you crazy kids are putting in it now to make it look so rediculous then Glastonbury is not the place you are going to want to be folks. Its sad to see you all leaving early cos the plimsoles are soaked through and your pop up tents are floating along behind you. Fear not there is a solution to your woes. I will buy your ticket off you. Well two tickets to be precise one for me and one for the girlfriend. Well what do you say folks. You know it makes sense. Mud and mayhem is just not for the softies among you. Peace.

this here thread - has turned into a weather thread - - from the content pleease merge with the ' i'm anticipating the worst' thread, rather that the ' it's gunna be a good un' or the 'once this blip has dried out it's gunna be a scortcher, again' threads !!

  • 2 weeks later...

I WIN!!! :P:P:P

I had the best bloody time identifying and dealing with the varying types of mud throughout the entire weekend. There wasnt any point at which it was possible to be able to match the precipitation with previous years and thus predict what was going to happen over each day and the endless Friday Mizzle did actually break me which was a real shame (tucked up in bed by 3am so no SL partying for me that evening).

There wasnt enough rainfall to warrant perfecting the GlastoMudShuffle anywhere compared to previous years but plenty of practise of MudMincing now officially endorsed by Professor Brian Cox happened. Only lost a boot once at the base of the Greenfields on the first night but I blame myself for not tightening my Trellies. Soon learnt after that!

My legs have never been so toned after just 4 days of wrenching across site (Thursday was particularly painful but we still got through it).

Billy Bragg (or the compere?) was right when he told the Glasto Virgins in the crowd during Infinite Monkey Cage 'if you think this is a wet fest, you have no idea!'

The only way to deal to deal with it is/was to get nicely squiffy, laugh, giggle, go with it, stop and rest for a while, consider/reconsider your routes, look at the mud and assess its goopy/glue consistencies and pick a way through. Having a walking stick helped massively, I never got stuck once after Wednesday. Even went out just in sandals throughout the whole of Sunday daytime and then was in trainers in the evening.

I love the mud. The Dissertation shall and will be released in due course.
