A night out in Norwich

We're heading to the Norfolk Broads this weekend on my mates stag do. We're planning a night out in Norwich while we're there, so I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions on where we should go for a drink or 3? We want to avoid wine bar style places at all costs. Pubs with good juke boxes, billiards tables, live bands and the like would ne much appreciated.

Oh and did the pedestrianisation of Norwich City centre happen?

the main going out place is prince of Wales rd which has the usual dance clubs, there is one rock pub on there which always seems tp be dead, for live music I've been to the brickmakers and the uni both quite a walk out.. though if you head out of town via tombland there is a nice rocky type place and a decent real ale pub called the cider shed

I left uni there almost 6 years ago, so this might be a bit out of date;

Basically Monday - Thursday are students nights, and Friday & Saturday are locals night. And this is Norwich, so I mean 'local'.

Avoid the Prince of Wales establishments at all costs at the weekend unless you're looking for sticky floors & fights. Horrible place. Mercy there used to be the 'best' club in Norwich, opened in 2004 I think.

Check out what's on at the Waterfront (in town) & the Uni LCR (~15mins cab). Both student union owned, Waterfront has a mix of students/locals & usually has a rock night on a Saturday. The LCR is on campus so is obviously very studenty, and sadly not that cheap for drinks.

Tomblands used to be good for lots of traditional pubs - the area was kinda dying when I was there though, don't know if its been rejuvenated since.

The Fat Cat is an excellent real ale pub, but does get a little cramped.

The Belgian Monk has a massive selection of bottled beers (europea, flavoured, monastry beers etc) and a decent selection on tap I think.

I honestly can't think of anywhere with a good pool table. So many pubs are in old buildings, so there's not really room.

Legend has it that there are 365 pubs and 52 churches in Norwich, so you can sin in a different place each night, and repent in a different place each week :P

(And if its a stag do you'll obviously be seeing the inside of Devil's advocate at some point :P)

    • They look to be, only ordered ours a few days ago. Go to the Greenman website and under tickets you'll find the option to get an Orange car park ticket.
