One person asks about avoiding adverts and instead of a simple explaination as to why they are required (quite reasonably), efestival reverts to the low level stuff (calling someone a turd) which we all see on all forums and dismiss as from those of a lower intellect.

This site is fantastic and there is always low level abusive stuff on all forums, but I would expect the site owner(?) to remain above it and to be professional at all times.

What you've missed here is the pre-history to his post, and what was edited from his initial post.

Firstly, his whole premise was completely wrong from a technical basis. He's been told this many time, both previously and this time around. But he still posts his bullshit.

Then there was the fact that he was encouraging people to use ad-blockers, while at the same time saying this site should have extra capacity - where that extra capacity requires the income from the adverts he thinks that people shouldn't have.

And ultimately, all this because he wanted to post his "guaranteed better" 'tip' - which would have actually decreased the chances of anyone using it getting tickets.

I've now properly set you up for no ads with the standard skin.

Later this week (perhaps today. I've not had a chance to do it in the last week, since it's been available) they'll also be the option of a no-ads mobile skin too, selected from the bottom-left of the forums pages.

I think you would need to filter the amount of info user could get for free.

IE non subscriber can see 20% of any post and not have search facilities.

That way you would still have a limited free feel to the site + generate some revenue. This is how my favorite adult site works.

Sorry to hear that Efestivals has financial problems, this is a great site. I always block ads for security reasons, even the biggest "reliable" providers have been reported as serving ads containing viruses and other nasties.

I only pop in here a few times a year, not enough to justify a £18 annual subscription. But I've just bought a T-shirt to try and help a little bit.

Some sites have it setup so that you can read anything for X page impressions or even Y minutes but then to carry on reading, you have to pay

Obviously people can delete cookies and change IP addresses but I guess this wouldn't apply to a large percentage of people.

Would you rather 100k users who contribute little of 1k users that contribute a lot?

the costs of setting up such a system would be far greater than the amount it would return.

It's not a great idea from the point of view of increasing company revenue.

It's a great idea for those who wish to use the forums ad-free. It's been made available because some wanted to use tyhe forums ad-free and were happy to pay for that privilege.
