Silent Arena at reading and leeds

it's been on the site for a week or so, so somebody might have beaten me to it but......

it says there is total capacity for 9000 people accross the festival.

now that seems like alot to me, most silent discos are just one small tent, maybe a thou in or so but 9000 seems mental how big is the tent gonna be!

Sounds good but I won't be venturing in, I don't really like the idea of Silent Discos, I prefer to hear the music pounding out big speakers and having a chat with my mates and random people.

Went in for an hour last year and hated it. Just doesn't seem normal having huge headphones on even when out and about never mind at a disco. Had to be increased tho because we waited for over an hour to get into it and that was on the last night so bet the cues were awful Thursday night. Not to 9000 tho, that seems way too big!

This week has been decisive for the tour schedule of the summer of 2010. The Reading & Leeds organisation Festival Republic wanted Silent Disco to be even bigger. To meet the conditions offered we should work with analogue headphones, a technical standard we abandoned years ago. And we could not present our show. We explored the possibilities and had to decide not to do it. Or in other words: we won't be at Reading & Leeds in 2010. That weekend we will be in Hungary and Holland.

So, for the British fans, make sure you're at Glastonbury Festival. We will be at Park and at Dance with a show every night. Or if you're going for a music holiday, meet us at Benecassim, Exit, Pohoda, Summerfest, Summersonic, Szin, Lowlands and other festivals. You'll find us at Edinburgh Fringe too throughout August.

I've been to a few silent discos before. They tend to be very hit and miss, when they're done properly they're immensely enjoyable and great fun. The initial gimmick of having multiple DJ's actually works wonders especially when they constantly mix up what they're each playing so you're forced to keep an eye on the other channels in case you miss a gem. However my experience of silent discos when they've been employed for the sole reason of them being a cheap way to get round noise laws and not an event in themselves is that they've been badly run and generally shite, so I fear Reading's might not be so great.

There is a Silent Disco at Glasto ye.

A 9000 capacity silent 'arena' sounds alright, a good start towards having more to do after the bands I suppose.

Having a silent disco that holds about 2000 people (if that?) as the (almost) sole after-band attraction at a festival that has 80,000-ish people there has always struck me as a bit of a piss take in the past.

Sorry, but I just don't see the attraction with a Silent disco at Leeds when there are plenty of open air areas playing music till well into the morning. I think alot of it is to do with the novelty, but no way would I queue to get in.

That's what I've always thought

Picadilly Party is always class

The camp DJ's can be hit and miss but every now and again you get a top class set from someone

I've never been to the SD but the novelty is really the only reason I would

Mind you, with the large silent arena this year the queues might be small and I might have a wander over but I'm guessing it's mainly for Reading who actually has significant noise restrictions

Very different music in the silent disco to what the campsite DJ's play, plus its generally a more fun/light-hearted atmosphere in the SD.

I only went to silent disco once since going to reading/leeds and it was great fun but I wouldn't want to do it too many times.

Mostly singalong stuff. Oasis, arctic monkeys, pulp etc- songs that everyone knows.

From my memory there wasn't this kind of thing anywhere else but I may be mis-remembering.

What kind of music do they play? I'd be surprised if it's that different to what you'd hear elsewhere about the campsite......unless they just play shite.
