Orange Introduce The Power Welly

June 8, 2010 by Jennie Cole

Nokia recently announced a new eco-friendly kit which uses pedal power to charge your mobile phone. However Orange appears to be going one step further – literally.

The company has said they are not far off launching ‘Orange Power Wellies’.

This is a boot which converts heat from your feet into an electrical current. So the more you walk or more specifically, the more energetically you walk the more power you produce.

For example, Orange reckons that if you walk for twelve hours you will create enough power to charge a mobile phone for one hour. Users then simply plug their phone into the power output found at the top of the boot and it will charge the device.

The company is initially aiming the new device at music festival goers such as Glastonbury festival. In fact, people attending this event will have the chance to try out prototypes. Orange will also have standard charging points available as well.

The rate at which new devices and applications are being offered to the mobile phone user is phenomenal, and is probably set to grow even more and at a faster rate.

One such new application links the phone with television. For example, it is now possible for Apple iPhone users to download an application whereby World Cup fans can watch the matches broadcast on ITV1 and ITV2.

Ben McOwen Wilson from ITV said: “…The ITV web app will enable iPhone users to find and watch their favourite ITV content, on the go and with this year’s World Cup fast approaching, iPhone football fans now have a new way to watch the latest action”

Strange coincidence.

I was only thinking about the potential for generating electricity to charge a phone after a conversation with Mrs P about those fan things you see on top of wood burning stoves.  Seems they work using a thing called a Peltier device which generates power using the difference in temperature between two surfaces.

Got me thinking about how you could embed one in a welly to use the difference between foot temp and ground temp to get the power to charge a phone, or to charge a battery that could then be used to charge a phone.

Geek mode off.
