Coalition's programme for Government

Ban sale of alcohol below cost price

Hmmm... Clearly this won't impact the bars on site but if this legislation is passed we won't be seeing such great deals in the supermarkets in the run-up to Glasto.

In all honesty I have no idea what 'cost price' is to someone like Tesco but clearly this is to prevent them doing loss leaders i.e. the really good deals on beer that get you there in the first place.

The other line that looks of interest is:

Temporary bans on new "legal highs

No problem with that at all, especially if it means there are fewer of the stalls that sell them. I've never like dthe look of those places.

Isn't this government supposed to be giving power back to the people and cutting back on New Labour's nanny state? We're not even two weeks in!

An update on this is that Tesco have come out in favour of the change!

Seems odd but makes complete sense - basically the Government price fixes for them.

Their buying power - i.e. the cost price of the booze for them - can probably only be beaten by ASDA (and then only due to the Wal Mart link)

As such this legislation would gurantee Tesco can turn a profit while offering the lowest price to entice punters.

Dastards!

I know this might not be popular but wouldn't it make sense if the duty on booze in supermarkets etc was much higher but was hugely reduced in pubs? Loads of pubs are closing all over the place. And it's not a surprise if you can buy beer so much cheaper in tesco or wherever. If the duty was reversed it might mean more pubs staying open. Might not of course, but worth a go?

Just a thought.

The way I read this (can't remember where) was that it was an attempt to curb binge drinkers by stopping BOGOF offers, happy hours, event promotion offers and the like. Just goes to show how misguided politicians actually are.
