From Liverpool it may be cheaper to split your ticket at Stafford (where you are likely to have to change) - ie buy tickets from Liverpool to Stafford and a second set from Stafford to Reading.

If you use the East Coast trains website, they have a cheapest fare finder which is really useful.

Note: the discounted tickets go on sale 12 weeks in advance so you won't find cheap fares for Reading weekend yet. They go on sale on a Thursday for a full week's worth. There is a box on the East Coast website that tells you what date they are booking up to.

To get the cheapest fare you may have to buy your tickets there one week and then wait a week to buy the return leg. Also note that the cheapest advance tickets force you to choose a specific train. You need to weigh up whether it is better to pay extra in advance, rather than risk missing the train and having to fork out for a new ticket (normally the difference between what you've paid and the full price ticket, plus a £10 service charge).
