Lesser Known Bands

Realistically though, would any of those be announced? Some of them, would have been announced already, others you need to go to a different festival, and others are just unlikely

although m83 could play the dance stage, that would be good

being honest, for FR I think theyve done well on the mainstage this year, almost as if theyve tried to stay away from mainstream bookings (im ignoring paramore here thats a shocker), and there are very few bands who you would say "oh, playing leeds again i see, typical festival band".. but then perhaps they felt insecure and thought theyd draw crowds with dizzee?! God knows what was going through their minds

Sonic Youth playing would be absolutely amazing, but theyd have to subheadline, they wouldnt draw enough day ticket sales to make money (even AF would draw more, but with Libertines underneath that days sorted anyway). I reckon they could subheadline under someone like muse/rem/etc.. though that would be incredible to see.

M83 will headline the dance tent when FR realise theyve already filled the NME with sickening dance-indie and bands too big to headline the dance stage (pendulum) and start booking good dance acts. If anyone uses the "creamfields take all the good dance acts" excuse, they dont, they take all the popular, club dance music.

Out of the 10 bands I mentioned, realistically..

The Jesus and Mary Chain - wouldn't bother

Sonic Youth - if they did, they would be (should be?) either headliners on a saturday or in the back-up to headliners role QOTSA are in this year on a sunday and blow everybody away. If they played, it would be a 'Where were you when...' moment.

My Bloody Valentine - no... the world isn't quite ready for their mainstream return yet. Wait for the NME to catch up and ressurect their "Kevin Shields is a weirdo" bullshit from almost 20 years ago.

Greg Sage/Wipers - never in a million years. Maybe ATP but not Reading or Leeds.

Steve Albini, Big Black, Shellac, Rapeman - they're more likely to play in my garage than at Reading or Leeds.

M83 - not quite mainstream but getting there. Will be there in 5 or 6 years

Jandek - Reading or Leeds don't deserve the presence of GOD!

Butthole Surfers - If Butthole Surfers played a single song on the main stage, the audience would be left absolutely speechless not knowing what the f**k just happened.

NWA - would get bottled off.

Massive Attack - now, I absolutely love Massive Attack but the problem with them is that they're what I would call a Glastonbury band. Anoraks love them and indie fans are amazed by them (bit like Radiohead - not musically, mind you). They're not a Reading/Leeds band but then, I ask myself, is Dizzie f**king Rascal?

NWA wouldn't get bottled off they just don't exist any more, Ice Cubes out making shit films, Yellas out making shit porn, Eazy's dead and Dre's still killing it on his own.

Whoever said about a list of obscure bands I posted, they're hardly obscure are they? I was just thinking probable over improbable, for example those wishing for Pavement, Sonic Youth etc.. Just thinking Daniel Johnston, Raincoats, Built to Spill etc are all way more probable as they would actually have a place left on the bill and are most certainly not obscure, I just struggled understanding what constituted a 'lesser known band' (which I'm sure I clearly stated) sorry for any misunderstanding Dirty Boots.

    • Tbf that happened to me in 2022 so not a one off. 40 euros to drive down 3 streets. I'd have done a runner but the reason for getting the taxi in the first place is cos I couldn't walk no more.
    • I was fully prepared (waterproof jacket, extra pair of socks, foldable umbrella), but after four hours in the rain (from Geese through Oklou to Florence Road), it was just too much. Already at the hotel, let's hope tomorrow's better.
