Lesser Known Bands

Well I heard a strong rumour that opening the stage on Friday will be the London Symphony Orchestra doing a rendition of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, thank god for "reeal" music and none of that guitar rubbish the kids listen to these days!

Actually, the closest you'll find to My Bloody Valentine is probably Serena-Maneesh. Fractured melodies hidden behind several billions layers of feedback wrenched Fender Jazzmaster's played to within every inch of their wooden lives. Soundpool also come pretty close but they're a bit more like a Disco Shoegaze crossover band.

Your open minded to music and then say the line up hasn't got "reeal" music because you're elitist and pretentious?

Do you actually enjoy music then or do you just like looking at the all the shiny albums you collect?

Holy f**k.

What are you on about The Big Pink, XX?? Nowhere near MBV, what about Deerhunter, No Age, Growing, A Place To Bury Strangers, APSE etc... and whoever mentioned Serena maneesh good shout.

Don't really know how MBV came into the equation but 'lesser know bands' (not really sure what you mean by that but i presume those which will be playing the carling stage) I would go for:

Newer bands: Gary War, Sleepy Sun, Strange Boys, Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Zola Jesus, Crystal Antlers, Abe Vigoda, No Fun, Japandroids, Gang Gang Dance, Neon Indian, Atlas Sound, Sic Alps..

and more established acts how about: Edan, Daniel Johnston, The Raincoats, Jeffrey Lewis, The Feelies, 764 Hero, Built To Spill, Beach House, Times New Viking, Why?

^ Would love to see any of them headline the Carling Stage, especially BTS but I'm seeing them play with Dino Jr in may so perhaps a Daniel Johnston set? Would be sweet.

If by taste you mean "open-minded to good music" then fortunately I'm blessed with an impeccable sense. There's a boundary one crosses before one becomes elitist (and pretentious) and I've crossed that many a time when I argue about how important The Velvet Underground was for the 175th time with a man I've never met before in a dustry record shop nobody ever goes to.

Riiiiight....

Any who if any thing i think there needs to be more big announcements.

Im looking for some more metal (come on KSE or All that Remains) and id love it 30S2M played but i wouldnt worry about lesser known bands, theres allways loads of new music to tune in to, thats what festivals are about, exploring new things you've never heard about..

Similarly if love Marina and the Diamonds to be confirmed, or see Florance and the machine again.

HOWEVER I am sad too see D.Rascal on the bill and im not that bothered by any of the headliners....

But man early on Friday looks good to me.

Sat main stage looks terrible bar Modest mouse...

I think, first of all, by the concept of real music I mean music that enthusiasts can enjoy - like, critic's bands and such. Off the top of my head, Yo La Tengo spring to mind.

Bands like Guns N Roses (who I love, by the way), Blink 182, Paramore - it's all fine and great playing them for the casual fans of music, but for anoraks who actually enjoy a more refined and soulful musical experience with deeper spirit and meaning, it'll always be great to see somebody like Dinosaur Jr on the bill. Give me a f**king Teenage Fanclub album over Lostprophets any day of the damn week.

It's like when you send an ambassador of football out to the world to spread the word, you send David Beckham. Yeah you get a taste, you get the message, but you don't get the passion because it's hidden behind money and a wall of complacency.

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
