In amongst all this friendly bickering you may also like to take a moment and realise/remember that all these videos of suffering children and oppressed human beings and political and green issues that will supposedly get played out for a brief part of the U2 show get played out for 3 days between the acts on the Pyramid Stage yes?

Who here can put their hand up and say they do not get moved every single time by the Greenpeace video with the New Radicals tune over the top of it? Its an integral part of the festival these days and if Bono happens to be playing or talking when such a similar video gets played out during his own set why is there an issue?

The show is going to be around 2 hours long and he is not exactly going to just stand there and preach for that entire time is he? No doubt there will be a wee party political broadcast of some description involved but with a world tv viewing population of christ knows how many, for 5 - 10 minutes of consideration to some of the crap this world is in is worth it to watch as people have said, one of the biggest bands ever confirmed for the festival is that going to be a reason not to watch?

1. I understand your point. And respect it. All that nice stuff etc.

2. I'm not convinced he'll do much 'preaching' anyway.

3. It's U2. They're going to play U2 songs. Preach away mate. I don't care - just play U2 stuff afterwards.

4. There is no-one (Gilmour/Waters aside) who could clash with them who I'd go and see instead of U2. It's U2 at Glastonbury FFS - how many times do such things happen? It's going to be BRILLIANT.

5. It's my last Glastonbury for a very long time. U2 to be one of the headliners to 'see me off' (not in the sense you mean)? Get in.

From a personal point of view, the fact that a huge band like U2 highlight the plight of Aung San Suu Kyi / the Burmese people during Walk On, means a lot to me given my family used to live in Burma.

No-one I know really knows anything about the situation out there.

I'm sure there are other people out there who feel the same, maybe about the other issues Bono highlights.

It is possible to use your fame to promote political causes and not come across a preaching, hypocritical tool about to jump onto his private jet- see Michael Stipe, Beastie Boys, etc. etc.

I think Bono tries to walk a fine line between being an egotistical rock star (as an 'act on stage') and using the lucky position he's been given to highlight issues that mean something to him.

Perhaps he is more clumsy than some in trying to be both.

Back in the 80's, Bono was pilloried for being exactly the opposite of what he is now accused of being -- i.e. too earnest.

Good post, I think. You've hit the nail on the head. Yes, we all like music, and yes we all like a bit of a dance to a great live band - but let's face it - there are more important things going on in the world, and if we as people are so self aborbed that we bitch and moan about a singer addressing those matters for five minutes over the course of a two hour set, then what sort of people are we?

Part of a lot of people's problems isn't what's being said, but who's saying it. Bono can do nothing right in the eyes of many people. I say 'sod em'. Stay away.

Do you? I think a lot of it is to do with someone who does try and do something, and a lot of people don't do anything, and it makes them feel bad about themselves.

It's called guilt. He puts people on a guilt-trip. And because - and this doesn't apply to everyone who moans about Bono - they don't do anything at all to help others who need help, they feel the best thing to do is lash out at the person who is reminding them of their own inadequacies.

That's what's really behind a lot of this.

And before I getting anyone screaming or crying foul at this, yes I'm sure you do "your bit". But let's face it, not everyone does.

Your anger is clearly clouding your judgement. I made it quite clear in my post that this set circumstances doesn't apply for all people. My position is that some people react angrily towards Bono because of guilt.

You are clearly getting angry at the wrong people. You should reserve that anger for the Burmese leadership, not me.
