I teach year 6. My school only works mornings on a Friday, and I've already agreed with my year group team that I can have the morning off. Today my head of year (we're a big school), said that I could have Thursday afternoon too if I wangle it with the Head. It was decided that I not mention it until Easter on a formal basis though. We'll be fully into end of year rehearsals for the school play at that point - this year we were giving each other afternoons off all over the place because we just didn't need that many staff running the rehearsals.

I won't skive, if they won't give me the time off then I'll only be able to go down Friday lunchtime.

I always leave Sunday night anyway (just can't drink anymore by Sunday), so Monday will be rough but do-able.

How to piss off your mates who are teachers - 2 examples:

1. You get long holidays, don't you?

2. You only work until 3.30. Get a full time job.

They only have 1 reply.

1. Yeah, but we have to do MARKING.

Bets response? F**k - how DO you manage to put a tick or a cross next to a 10 year old's 12 times tables homework?

Annoys them greatly. It's fun. And they need to be annoyed. Put 2 teachers (who have never previously met before) in a room and introduce them as teachers and you can bet they'll talk about f**king teaching.

Ah well, we get to go to Glasto on Wednesday morning. Early. And be drinking beer before 9am whilst you're trying to teach some ignorant sprogling that Churchill was prime minister, not a 'jowley insurance hound'.

I spend a lot of time in the company of teachers. And they talk about teaching too much. Does my irritation show?

Well, I came in to teaching late after 10 years in finance management.. and you'll get no arguments from me, the holidays are ace.. even if in reality you only end up getting half your official amount as 'free' holidays, it still allows me a month long trip a year plus a couple of other holidays. I would have been lucky to find time to take my official 5 weeks at all in my old job.

The rest of the working conditions are broadly comparable - I work just as much in my 'free' time now as I did in my previous 'life'. Just now I have a load more fun at work, I laugh more in a day at the 'office' than I used to in a year. I earn shit all in comparison, but for the moment it's worth it.

I try not to talk about teaching with my mates. It's boring for them.

You don't spend *enough* time in the company of teachers! Your spelling and grammar is appalling, you man!!! :(

    • Not my experience. I've always got the size I paid for.
    • Kind of crackers how fast this summer seems to be sailing by. But aye, must be some news soon!
    • I am very possibly wrong about this but I do think that the pitch you get allocated appears to be related to your time of arrival, (i.e. you get the next one available) rather than the price you paid for a small, medium or large pitch.  They all appear to be the same size to me.
