Tent Issues :(

I'm having tent issues at the moment, currently have an Outwell Jersey S 2 man popup tent:

However one of the poles has snapped at the base of the tent at the back:

Is there anything I can do to repair this or is it a case of getting a new tent? If its a new tent I'm looking for something similar, maybe a bit more spacious but also not overly expensive either...

Well, my opinon would be to slice the holding fibre and bind the broken bit up with strong industrial tape. That should do the trick.

For the sake of getting another festival out of it then superglue is not a bad idea either.

I do think though that because it is a pop up then these things are made with certain tolerance levels in mind and so trying to fix it may not work.

I would go for a new tent although it is a shame to lose a whole tent just because of one broken section.

I'm going to keep the tent as a backup for random events... however on Go Outdoors I'm torn between these:

Vango Beta 350 3-man Tunnel Porched Tent £49.99

Hi Gear Atom 3 Dome Tent With Porch £51.99

Hi Gear Proton 3 Double Skin Tent £69.99

Hi Gear Electron 3 3-Man Tunnel Tent £89.99

Any comments on these?

I'm not sure what these pop up tents use for their poles, but you can buy sections of fibreglass poles to repair normal tents. Now I assume these will be no good to repair a pop up tent, but they come with a short metal connector to join lengths of poles. All you've got to do is buy a pole (or just the metal connector if you can buy them separately) the same diameter as the ones on your pop up, then use the connector to join your broken section. Maybe add some gaffa to hold the thing firmly in place.

Stanley knife your way in to the broken ends. Overlap them by an inch. Jubilee clip them together. Don't do it too tight or you'll crush the poles.

If you want to go belt and braces, you can then plaster the whole thing in epoxy (two-pack adhesive - £1 from a cheapo tool shop.)

The whole job should cost you less than £2, and you don't have to put a serviceable tent into a landfill site.

I've got the 450 version of the Vango.

It's a nice piece of kit, however it is massive and obviously fairly bulky when packed up. ie couldn't really attach it to your rucksack.

I would def buy a new one as no way would you want to be at Glasto for 5 days with a suspect tent that could let you down if some idiot takes a stumble over it.

@ xploit

i've experienced the same problems with the 'pop out the bag' tents - pole snapping beyond repair only to end up at landfill! I'm on my 3rd popup now and will be my last for sure - look pretty cool but too flimsy!!

Did witness an amazing new tent whilst camping in wales last week from a sales rep from SLUMIT .. really really cool! She said they will be launching this summer with two high spec tents - 2 and a 3 birth if i'm right!?. The tent is all in one, the carry bag is smaller than my cycle wheel pop up bag and is as easy to erect! I had a go with the 2 berth and it took me about 4 secs to put up!! I'm buying one for sure for V!!

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
