They were (allegedly) off their face on marching powder and going on about how they were the greatest band in the world, and no one could touch them, and they were gonna be around forever.

I think bland might be a bit harsh; what I think makes them good is their gigs are frantic and lively. I don't see what the NME have to do with them either?
