sorry not travelling from birmingham - i only live in dorset which is just a short train trip to lymington where i get the ferry from

Not from Birmingham, though quite likely to be passing through it. Last year we changed trains there going back up - I *think* we took a CrossCountry train from Southampton straight to Birmingham (or possibly one change) and it was really cheap (well, it was cheap starting at Portsmouth and going all the way to Glasgow - less than £20 each as I recall!).

In fact me and a mate (or two) are planning a mini road-trip on the way down and Birmingham was floated as an option - would you recommend a few nights there in terms of pubs/nightlife/interesting things to do during the day?
