True. But the fact they're being booked to headline - above Blossoms who have their own stadium gig next summer - means someone thinks they're bigger than JP level.

I couldn't see them being booked any higher than John Peel headliner or, more appropriately, third down Other Stage or something. They're one of those bands that sell out arenas but too far past it to really claim a big spot at Glastonbury. Like I'm pretty sure Kaiser Chiefs have been doing arenas on-and-off for years and their last slots were JP headline and about halfway down the Other.

    Did JJ make that poster?

    Not enough Bastille.

Tracklist out for Oxnard now. Still think Tints is garbage, and I'm sad to see Bubblin isn't gonna feature on it, but some of these featured names - and no doubt the producers still to come - got me pretty excited for this.

How much of a deal is merch to bands these days? Particularly at the lower end of the scale?

I generally like me a band / tour shirt :)

A massive deal really. The merch table is the most direct revenue stream.

If the Strokes are playing Rock Werchter could be that why they moved the festival? We said Kendrick but The Strokes are American also and wouldn't want to stay in the continent longer than they could. I know it could be because of Tour de France but that would make sense also.

No bud. The Strokes aren’t gonna be playing Glastonbury and I think they’re only rumoured for RW because they’re rumoured for festivals weeks before/after RW. I wouldn’t invest any more time into wondering why Rock Werchter moved dates, it could be a number of things - none of which we’ll ever know for sure.

Hey I thought grunge meant we never had to hear that again?

    ?

Ah it's not a threat anymore, and the OG hair metal bands are getting on a bit. Might as well enjoy the nonsense of it all now rather than regret missing it later!

Do you think there's any chance of a Jack White set across the weekend, perhaps a 2nd down on the main stage.

    Welcome.

Even aside from debating whether he'd belong at R+L anymore; Jack White doesn't tend to stay on tour for that long nowadays and I think he's moving forward with a new Raconteurs album next year.

I know next to nothing about them tbh. Googled the names of their hits the other day after they were announced and I only recognised Pour Some Sugar On Me. That's enough for me to know I'm not interested haha.

Willing to bet you'll have more fun seeing them than the other headliners.

Themselves, hip hop artists and rappers. They don't give a shit and laugh at themselves and everyone else. I like that. It's really refreshing in this day and age.

I'm glad Download is embracing them. It's the sort of ridiculous, antagonistic shit that has kinda gone missing from rock and metal, to some extent. Hope they sub.

George Ezra would be a fairly huge sub headliner. Surely it'd need to be the mega headliner he's behind if anyone?

Why is this a thing people say? Surely a huge sub benefits a smaller headliner? Like The 1975 and Biffy Clyro. Or they want to use all their strongest acts on the easiest sellout...

When George Ezra was likely getting booked for next year, he only had an academy-ish tour behind him. I would think his arena tour must have come too late to affect his 2019 slots.

I really don't think Kooks will sell well at all, since like half of the audience will of probably seen how shite they were at Reading - hopefully something more to come

They sold out Wembley Arena only last year. And I imagine that audience won't be turning their nose up at seeing Blossoms and more on the same bill.

Surely we're looking at Kooks headlining with Blossoms subbing? Kooks were 3rd down at Reading this year, same spot Two Door played the year before they headlined.

Same spot as The Vaccines though. And Blossoms!

But yeah I think you're right. The Kooks were the second biggest band I could think of that could headline this but I thought they might be a bit old. Would be majorly surprised if they announce any bigger artists tomorrow.

  11. Tool should sell out their day. Like how many day tickets must there be? 10,000?

Yo but seriously I'm not gonna explain it very well but I'm gonna offer an opposing view and say they could well sell out their day.

The rarity, for one, is a huge deal because Tool fans - of which there are many, for whatever reason - have been waiting for this for years and probably aren't gonna wanna miss this opportunity in case it never comes again. Also I would actually say that they reach quite far outside of metal - whether those people were ever into metal or whether they had 'a phase' and Tool were the only band who went away rather than gradually getting worse, I'm not sure, but they do as far as I can tell.

GNR or AC/DC getting announced at Download is mainly good for people who are already Download fans. The people that see those mega-bands have been doing for years and won't be jumping at the chance to go see them at Donington when they've been saving up to go see them around Europe or whatever. Those bookings are weekend ticket sellers.

I don't think weekend tickets will sell out here but yeah, I could certainly picture Sunday tickets being depleted.

How did the announcements for this work last year? The festival announced all at once and the APE Presents days all announced separately?

The xx was announced first, with The National, TWOD, Future Islands and Warpaint. Then a week later the main festival announcement was added to The xx. Then like a month later was Nick Cave and a month after that was Catfish.

When The xx and The National were announced, someone said on DIS that they'd heard about this and that the other acts would be Bjork, LCD and Nick Cave so we already knew quite a bit straight away.

There's an argument for it, haven't got any facts to back it up but it certainly feels that the cost of gig tickets is rising faster than the annual cost increase for a Glastonbury ticket.

Last time Paul "The Macca" McCarthy played Glastonbury, he was charging £30 standing, and Glastonbury was £112 back then, so I guess you're right as I imagine his standing this year was more than the correlating £67.50. But I think the same people rapidly priced out of Glastonbury are rapidly priced out of seeing legendary bands anyway. Just kinda (obviously) annoys me when one ridiculous price is used to encourage another, particularly when it's important that not everyone onsite actually goes to the headliner.

Could be argued that a fixed admin fee would be fairer - does it cost more to send out a £200 than a £75 one? Do they gold-plate the envelope? Or are they, indeed, just taking the piss

In the way that you all get the same service then yeah, that's why delivery charges don't change between price levels. But it's incredibly common in many industries - especially for luxury items - for the service charge to be relative to the price of the thing you're paying for.

Considering The National headlined APE and subbed Glastonbury, could The Strokes sub a headliner or are they bigger than The National? Really do think The Strokes will headline other but could they play the Pyramid?

Each Stroke costs a whole National.

  15. 52 minutes ago, Hugh Jass said:

Used to be that seeing all three Pyramid headliners alone would pretty much cover the ticket price alone, that's before you get into the thousands of other acts, attractions and general five days of fun... Now it's only one or two.

So it’s actually better value than it was 20 years ago?

  16. 11 minutes ago, OddRon said:

supposedly he only does headline slots so he's either not playing or swallowed a big pill and accepted maybe other headliner or pyramid sub. Saw him earlier this year at his two week stay in London and it was wonderful so would happily see him again

He subbed Beyoncé (ultimately Lady Gaga) last year at Coachella. I think he must have walked back on that demand, or it was a tall tale in the first place.
