Unusual entries into Glasto

My ticketless brother once flew from Ireland to Bristol and then hitch hiked to Glasto. He then proceeded to jump on the back of an ambulance (Spider Man stylee) that was entering the site and then went straight through, no problem. What unusual entrances (with or without tickets) to Glasto have you or someone you know made?

PS - my brother said his flight back to Dublin was different - what with him being the only one covered head to toe in mud and all that.

Back in the early 90's I climbed over the fence by using a vicar's wife as a human ladder! That was when you could just about get over the fence. She'd driven an ambulance load of us and her daughter to the festival, none of us with tickets and then preceeded to help us get over the fence but chose not to climb over herself as she didn't think it was morally right!! I just thought that was an excuse and she was really scared of heights!

Bravo.A very fine example indeed.I will pray for that woman.

I remember that fence too. They may as well not have had one. I was a bit like the vicar's wife in that I had to have a ticket, but was more than happy for people who didn't have one to get in (except the thieving bastards of course). Very different days those.

When I was younger I recall my brother telling me that him and his pals dug a tunnel going under a fence, covered it with plastic to keep from getting dirty and charged people a fiver to go through it. Earning himself and mates free entry and spending money for the weekend from his fraudulant gains.......

The same brother one year got everything stolen from his tent, including his clothes. B)

Having said this, my brother is a bit of an arse and it could all be total lies!

It could very well be true that he dug a tunnel and I may even have met him, as I stumbled across someone who had done just that and was charging people to get in- many years ago though and was in the times of the old fence.

There has been talk that someone once constructed a tent on the inside of the festival to shield the fact that so many people were getting in through a tunnel. Lots and lots of people emerging from the same 2 man tent! Could be true as I've seen the tunnel part in real life.

In 2008 we decided at the last minute to head to Glastonbury. We got tickets from Ebay and my mum had to put hair extensions in. To get my dad through he had to pretend to be blind! And the name on my ticket was Ali Houshangie....surprisingly I got turned away at Gate D. I walked all the way to Gate A, got in and phoned my mum. As soon as she answered I just stated. "I'm in!"

Now that is dedication for you. True Dunkirk spirit that. I tip my hat to your family Sir.

Not a problem, happy to provide you with some entertainment. I can tell ya though the image of my dad, without his actual glasses, wearing big black blind men glasses and stumbling around pretending to be blind? unmissable!

In 2007 a friend of mine turned up on the thursday, in tears, claiming that her wristband had been yanked off. She caused such a scene that eventually they just let her in.

In 2000 we turned up ticketless and started the usual trudge round the fence looking for weaknesses, from one of the gaps a scouse voice shouted through that you could come in through their 'gate' for a tenner. We considered it for 2 minutes, until someone came tearing back through the gap in the fence, when you paid the friendly looking chap at the gap he let you through to his mates, who were robbing everyone that they let in, the poor bugger that escaped was quite badly beaten, it has to be said. We walked on a little further, found a weak spot and scampered through, happy to have escaped a beating.

In '89 we had to climb a tree to get over the fence (over by where the common is now, by cockmills farm) and I spent nearly 10 minutes trapped by my fear of heights, afraid to jump down and my mates mocking me for months to come.

It's not just a case of people trying it, it's that it still happens that there are scumbags who will try and wrestle a wristband off an offsite punter. As recently as reading '08 I have met people who have had this experience and it is not pleasant by all accounts.

I'm still not knocking my mate for blagging it, I've never been averse to skanking my way in, have now proudly reached the point where I've bought a ticket more times than I've fence jumped so feel I don't own mr E a thing (he LIKED us being there til people took the piss, myself included). People still blag their way in, I met several over the last couple of years I've been back and it is VERY tempting to give a few mates a bell on the friday when work is out for the weekend but you have to respect the license these days or they'll take the fun away.

I have always paid for my ticket, but have been happy for other decent people to get in free. It's the toe rags who I obviously object to. Less in nowadays than there used to be - hence the thieving outside. Someone tried to Rob my afore mentioned brothers tent one year, only he was in it at the time. There were several of his mates around and the would be thief had a very large mallet. His mates were egging him on to hit my brother with it once he emerged from the tent but he didn't. I think he knew that although we were outnumbered my brother was going to hurt him before he went down. Same year some girls next to us were crying in the morning when we stumbled out of our tents. They had been robbed of all their money the night before. It was their first time at Glasto and they'd gone out leaving money in their tents. Hard to maintain the goodwill vibe when these things happen.

Don't go to sleep is the answer!!

That spooky because that indeed would have been around the time. I can't remember specifically because I have inadvertently wiped most of my memory through indulgence. There may well have been loads of badger type people burrowing tunnels though. Some successful and some going off digging in the wrong direction only to end up breeding with real badgers. Apologies - I'm going off on one of my flights of fancy.

Just remembered one fact - it was at night but was well lit by the floodlights.
