Are festivals strict with Lense Camera's ?

Heyy, just bought a new bridge camera, its the Panasonic Lumix fz38. Im just curious if they are strict on these cameras as i read on the radio ones big weekend site, that Lense cameras are not allowed. And seeing as though im going, i dont want to turn up and have my camera taken off me. :/

What do you suggest ?

Glastonbury is not like your typical festivals. I believe there are no restrictions on what photography equipment you can take in. The security at the front are more concerned with safety. I think the lowdown is as long as its not going to be used commercially then your fine. If you sell photos on then that's clearly infringing copyright, if its for your own use then gfl actually encourages photography as you can see from the photo upload on the official site. Just make sure you keep your kit safe

I believe the only significant rules are no tripods and that all content you create must be for your own personal use (I.e. Non-professional).

Ive heard that some lens cameras were confistcated at previous years.

I think Glastonbury are more relaxed but be careful

Has anyone taken a monopod?

I planned to bring one along that doubles as a walking stick to help my old knees get around the site.

I figured no tripods, that makes sense...but I hadn't considered a monopod might be an issue until your post got me thinking...

Anyone ever taken one before?

This will be my fifth time over to Glasto, and I have always taken my DSLR with me. Last year I was camping out of the festival and the security checked my bag daily, they never said a word. With regards to tripods I wouldn't carry one around, its a bit too heavy, bulky and annoys people when you set up to shoot. A monopod is a good option, but you can use other ways such as your rolled up jacket (poncho) or your camera bag itself. Keep all your extras in the lock up and not in your car (there is no one looking over your car). A bridge camera is quit light so an other solution would be to use one of those flexible tripods. I got one of them and they are pretty handy light packable things.

What camera do you intend to take with you? If you have a good ISO rating and a good aperture you will not be needing much of a tripod especially if your camera has image stabilization included in it like most recent models.

Just remember the no flash rule in the Acoustic tent and it might also be in place in some of the smaller indoor stages. Even if it's not enforced in some of those locations it's not good form to fire camera flashes into the faces of performers.

edit: the bit about no tripods is for video capture, not still photography. However, it would not be sensible to try to set up a tripod in an indoor venue and I'm sure security would insist that you didn't. Also at night in the middle of one of the large stage audiences it would be a health and safety issue. If you want to take one to use for long exposure night shots of the site where it won't be an obvious hassle or tripped over there should be no problem.

I checked with the festival office last year (I too was worried about taking a lens camera for the same reason) & they said that the camera would be fine but they did advise against taking a tripod as that could appear more professional or something.

Had no trouble at all with using the camera - mind you we weren't up close to any of the acts etc so I don't know how they would react in that situation.

I tend to keep my flash off as a rule, especially any time that I'm shooting a performance. I would rather capture the stage lighting than wash it all out...plus the whole distance thing...it always cracks me up a little to see flashes coming out of the top deck of a arena or stadium...

George, I have a fairly new (few months old) Nikon D90, so ISO won't be an issue.

Actually figuring out how to make the best use of it may be an issue in my case...I know the camera's spec's far exceed my abilities to take advantage of them....

I have a small tabletop ball head tripod I can set on something if I want any really long exposures. And the camera has a VR (vibration reduction) feature on the lenses. So, I've planned all along to leave the tripod at home, but the Monopod is pretty light and I think it'll help me on any night shooting that I attempt.
