Metallica because while they have an amazingly deep back catalogue

Deep is a stretch, half of their albums are shit fodder and every time I mention I actually liked Hardwire I get told off for being wrong. 😜

With Copping's seem insistence to stick to hard rock acts as much as he can

Aerosmith (2010, 2014, 2017) - maybe one last turn but seems like their farewell tour is off with Tyler's health issues

    KISS (2008, 2015, 2022)

It's certainly seems a better direction of travel than starting to try and get a load of aging indie bands like The Killers / Arctic Monkeys etc

Copping is not being instant, he can't book anything that's not metal as he's just a shit booker. He's lined up the likes of Blink 182 and Foo Fighters to headline in the past but they bailed before they were announced. Fuck it's taken him 10+ years to get Metallica back which is one of the most obvious bookings possible for Download.

Aerosmith have already called off the retirement on the last farewell run. What a joke.

KISS are also retiring but unlike Aerosmith they actually mean it thankfully.

The Killers and Artic Monkeys are both way out of Download's league even if they were metal.

Also when people talk about sustainability at festivals it's normally shit like no single use plastic rather than Download just books the same headliners over and over again.

I for one would be happy to see 2 Metallica sets. They have so many songs to fit in anyway and like it's been mentioned it's better than the normal Thursday. If anything it's BMTH who absolutely need a band up against them on second. They are actively hated by a good chunk of the Download crowd.

In terms of AC/DC who knows, but I doubt they will be at any European festivals next year.

Slipknot announced on social media that their US dates later this year will be their last US ones 'for awhile' as they go and tour worldwide. If you look at their European tour this year it misses alot of the big festivals, apart from Wacken*, so they seem to be a favourite for Download, Hellfest, Copenhell etc next year.

*Which would make total sense if they are gonna do Rock AM/IM.

Yeah, Downloaders hate younger bands. I still find it mental that they consider Slipknot a younger band. lol

I disagree, 'tellica need a band against them the most as their set will be fucking rammned otherwise. Chucking someone else on to split the crowd is just sensible.

'tellica were at Hellfest this year. I can see them playing again next year but they wouldn't be the first band I would think of for their headliners.

Other nights will need to be incredibly strong or it's a day ticket for me. I don't really see the point of that tbh.

It's 'tellica, people will love them being there two nights. They just need to make sure the second stage is actually on for once, one for the over crowding on the mainstage because it's 'tellica and two for the lot who are jaded with them can see someone else.

My French isn't great (I used Google translate) but what the Hellfest bookers appear to be doing is expressing wishful interest in booking AC/DC. I think what they said translates as like 'if AC/DC call me tommorow I will discuss with them' or something in the context of saying how great it was that Metallica called saying they wanted to play. So not really a rumour at all. If anyone has a better translation please say!

That could be part of courting to get them, a few festivals talk about how much they want X act during the negations.

Has anyone seen Volbeat are doing an UK arena tour with Skindred and Napalm Death supporting. :)

Does anyone know what the best thing is to do with 2 extra rolling stones tickets for July 3rd ? I would happily cancel or resell at ticket value or resell on fan site but axs and ticketmaster won't allow this for those two to be resold through their site.

There is only the option to transfer so it is complicated. Any help appreciated! Thanks 😄

Put it up on Twickets and once it's sold transfer it to them.

  6. I've got no idea on what the crowds are like this year but Astroworld was less than a year ago. I don't think the put on a smile let's complain about it later is the best attitude to have with crowd safety...

I was there too, Weezer were surprisingly good, covered Enter Sandman for a laugh and it was decent.

Best I’ve seen FOB (over 2016 and 2018 at R&L). The whole gig was basically a celebration of absolute bangers, not much stretches of obscure or brand new stuff no one knows.

Did you think the fireworks were meant to sound like explosions on purpose? 🤣

Weezer covered Enter Sandman because a few months ago The Metallica Blacklist was released which had 50+ acts cover a song from the Black Album including Elton John, IDLES, Flatbush Zombies, Phoebe Bridgers etc and Weezer was one of them. Ghost was on it too and have added Enter Sandman to their setlist on the last tour.

I was indifferent to Fall Out Boy, the crowd were loving them but I've never been keen on them myself so I volunteered to leave the golden circle to get alcoholic slushies for my group whilst the bars were less crowded.

Amyl was great after I was worried seeing them on a big stage wouldn't translate well for them, Weezer was loads of fun sing alongs plus the shtick with the broken guitar was cool and Green Day are probably the best stadium band I've ever seen, they are so infectious from the front to back of the stadium unlike some shit that plays stadiums.

Oh I bet that was pretty infuriating. I thought I was being clever by sacking off Stratford for Hackney Wick, only to arrive there just as a train was leaving (as happened when I tried that for Muse in 2019) and then during the 10 minute wait for the next one the platform just got rammed.

Until then the main grievance (imo sound could've been better but did improve the more each act played) was twice getting pelted by lobbed pints during Green Day. Not a part of the stadium rock show experience I missed.

Throwing pints is such a dickhead move, why the fuck are you wasting a £7 drink let alone throwing it as someone. There was a c**t who was in her late 30s/early 40s who threw her drink maybe 10 feet away and saw who it hit whilst giggling.

I've been to gigs where the band tells you to look after each other in the pit etc but you don't see enough bands say something about drink throwing. I've only ever seen Idles say something about it.

If I'm honest, the trains weren't as bad as I was expecting for my trip to the Hella Mega Tour show at London Stadium. The train I had from Milton Keynes to London got cancelled but I could get an alternative, and the one back wasn't as overcrowded as some really bad services. The Overground between Stratford and Highbury & Islington, however... yeesh.

It was maddening at Green Day last night. I could have just got a bus home but the buses were on division because of the gig so instead I had to get the overground which took me longer.

If I paid £100 to see RHCP live and they didn't play Can't Stop, I'd want a refund.

The problem is they play Can't Stop and then they don't stop jamming on for the next two hours. Can't Stop isn't a song, its a warning!

  11. Electric Ballroom is a bigger venue than what I was expecting but I still reckon they have got a good chance of selling it out. The friends and special guests bit makes me reckon there's a good chance of a decent undercard, some of their frequent collaborators like The Skints, Kid Kapichi and Strange Bones all together would be a fucking stellar evening.

We have a spare Elton John ticket for today, 24th. Very last minute so open to reasonable offers, can meet you and transfer via BST app in person

Good luck with that. Glasto, Ed Sheeran and Green Day are all today too so that's a lot of the gig going population unavailable plus throw in rail strikes.

    ’Closer’

The funny thing is I've mentioned to people I'm seeing/seen Nine Inch Nails and then I have to go they did Closer and Hurt but they are still lost so then I have to say the I Want To Fuck You Like An Animal song and Johnny Cash covered them for them to go Ah okay.

Since this is the R&L section I have even lower expectations that people would know them.

  14. Meh, it's Peppers so you're lucky if you get them on a good day let alone worrying if they are playing a specific hit.

I'm less worried about bands that have a monstrous back catalogue on what they will play as chances are you can get a cool rare deep cut instead of an established hit you're sick of hearing of. Like I saw Nine Inch Nails the other day and they didn't play the I Want To Fuck You Like An Animal song which is probably their biggest song but I didn't care as the band is so good live and they brought in a few deep cuts to wow me instead. Besides people should be going to see the band themselves play rather than just wanting to hear that one specific songs, waiting around for 2 hours for one song is so fucking boring. Maybe it's a new thing as people don't listen to albums anymore just their shitty Spotify playlists so they only expect greatest hits now?

It's only really a problem with all of these indie landfill bands of the last 20 years that have to milk the one decent album they did to put on a good show but then still have to do an anniversary of that album tour to reassure people they will only play the songs they know.

Green Day with Fall Out Boy and Weezer at London Stadium tomorrow. I've actually not seen the last two before.

Just not sure how smooth it'll go with the trains given the potential for any residual issues from today's strike.

Get there early as the awesome Amyl & The Sniffers are opening.

Yep last time I saw them they were just totally not interested, think it was a Leeds fest but memory escapes me. Royal Blood with some grub it is

Royal Blood when I've seen them before put on a great show, it's impressive that just two guys can make so much noise. Of course it's dependant on their health though.

  17. 57 minutes ago, BenG92 said:

Royal Blood singer lost his voice after 5 songs at Hurricane and called it quits apparently. Seems like they managed to play Vienna okay last night though.

More I think about it more I might just go see Jimmy Eat World and some Disclosure instead. Saw a bad Jimmy show once upon a time so haven't gone back since but maybe I need to drop that memory.

If it helps, I've seen Jimmy twice and both times were meh. They seem to lose interest in the middle (pun!) and only perk up for a couple of songs. First time was at Reading years ago and the other time was more recently supporting Frank Turner in 2019.

I hate hearing the excuse too that 'it's better' for bands like Bleed From Within and Spiritbox to play later in a tent so they get more of a crowd than early on the Main Stage where they 'won't play to anybody'. That's total bollocks. So many people missed out on seeing those two exciting bands because they could get nowhere near the tents. Yet a band like Wayward Sons, who are really small and sound like a local pub band can open the Main Stage?

Download is not Reading and Leeds. People head to the arena en masse early every single year. As we all know, plenty of folk pitch up at the Main Stage all day from the moment they enter the arena. There are always plenty of people in the arena and at the Main Stage in time for the opening slots. Showcase the most exciting, hyped and popular up and coming acts in that time and they will sell more tickets on their next tours and be back in higher slots in the coming years.

How are these sorts of bands supposed to get bigger and progress up the bill when the biggest platform for them to do so ignores them?

It may sound silly but I was very close to going this year and Bokassa, a hyped up new band just like Code Orange/Jinjer/Spiritbox etc, playing for only 20ish mins high up on the smallest stage was the deal breaker for me.

My missus loves Frank Carter (although I am a fan too) and she has suddenly got I Was Made for Lovin You stuck in her head a week or two before the fest so I was thinking of getting us day tickets so we can then see KISS and Frank Carter for her and I can see Bokassa and Skindred for myself but Skindred and Bokassa were clashing so really we'd only have three bands we are excited for even if we can enjoy/mildly like some of the others acts playing that day.

I do find it odd that Metallica have been bigging up Bokassa as the next big thing so with a recommendation like that you'd think them opening the mainstage could draw some people even if they don't know them. They are solid live too and very charming with their stupid jokes/stories so they could have won the crowd over for those who don't know them.
