That is my biggest bugbear when it comes to Download, more so than the repetition of headliners. As the biggest rock/metal festival in the country, it’s their duty to give those bands help but they consistently don’t. It’s a massive failing on their part.

Yeah, that type of booking does work too. Babymetal were unkown to the West until Sonisphere booked them to open the mainstage and a few short years later they ended up playing Wembley.

It's not even as if Download are booking at least Brixton sized acts on the mainstage, alot of times it's these bands that have been around for years and look out of place on a big stage with no hope of ever moving up the line up.

Checking out Jinjer at Hellfest and that vocalist is pretty impressive live. I'd watch these.

Jinjer is another one of those hot new acts where instead of Download putting them on low mainestage so people can check out this new band people are talking about they will stick them on the tiny tent when they are up against the bigger names so no one will see them.

That was even better than Eden Project! Sunspots and Even Deeper! Very very sweaty in there, I thought the strikes would have put more people off.

You're a lucky bastard, I've just seen the setlist.

  4. It's very annoying only a handful of people are listing tixs on twickets for tonight and they get sold instantly and apparently Ticketmaster have turned off the resale option on the tickets now so it looks like I won't be going tonight. 😞

Yeah  I live literally 5 minutes from Eden. It's a really nice area, lots of nice beaches and walks. Don't bother with st austell town centre, it's a run down hole unfortunately. Charlestown it's well worth a visit, a picturesque historic harbourside with nice restaurants and bars. Also Fowey is really nice and has boat trips and probably the best pubs in Cornwall, The galleon is a favourite and has bands on Friday and Saturday nights. Enjoy your weekend mate, NIN were amazing last night from what I've heard.

Thanks for that. I was planning on going to Charlestown already and it was lovely. 🙂 I managed to get a good seat at the pub overlooking the harbour and spent a few hours drinking and admiring the view. I was gonna go to the Shipwreck Museum too but when we got there a bunch of kids were going in as part of a school trip so we skipped it to avoid them.

I'm definitely keeping an eye on what Eden Sessions are happening next year for another weekend away even if it's not a must see band like NIN.

Biffy on a new tour with Architects subbing. Weird combo. Might actually venture out to see them if the price is right.

Maybe they are expecting to cross over more with metal fans after Download. I’m surprised Architects are willing to sub as they are a decent sized act.

    Keep an eye on twickets.

I hate to say it, but with there being a rail strike on the Tuesday, that may cause some to throw some extra tickets back into the mix.

Yep, I’ve already set up my Twickets alert and I had a look on ticketmaster for anyone is reselling.

I’m hoping for some people to cancel because of the train strikes but last night I was talking to people from who came Jersey, Norway and Australia so it looks like a lot of people aren’t letting travelling put them off.

  7. Fucking hell they were great last night! The set list was not as good as Friday’s but they were so good it didn’t matter. Yves was pretty good too.

Eden Project makes for an awesome venue, drinks and toilets are never that long, it looks amazing and the slope is good for everyone having a good view. Getting there turned into a nightmare as I couldn’t get a taxi so we had to walk 2 miles in the hard pissing down rain on country roads with no pavement. It was so worth it though!

Hopefully I can find someone selling a tix for the London show next week so I can watch them again.

There is no chance that if Andy gets the chance to get Knotfest on the festivals 20th anniversary that he doesn't do it. He didn't get them on the 10th so.

The fact Slipknot haven't done a Knotfest show with the other European one's this year as well says a lot. I also think they've talked and decided that maybe they don't have the pull to do it here on the bigger scale themselves without a festival. They never sell out their Download day with a day full of bands so. Don't get me wrong, they are huge in their scene etc etc but there is selling an arena tour out over multiple dates at 15k each etc and then selling 50k in one go out.

I'm still inclined to go with Knotfest, BMTH, RATM and Metallica. Not going to lie though through personal preference I'd rather SOAD be where RATM are.

The it’s sold out metric doesn’t really apply to Download. Download rarely if ever sells out even with stadium headliners.

Also the not sold out analysis is so boring anyway, it treats bands that have sold 98% of the venues tickets as the same as ones that has sold 21% as equals failures as it’s binary rather than allowing for shades of grey.

I'm a postie, and was down there early evening to empty the post box so went past the entry queue. I had to laugh at some people dressed in black trousers and full on goth gear, when it was about 30 degree heat. I was melting in tshirt and shorts.

Are you a local then? I’m having a long weekend away in St Austell to see NIN plus the beach & Eden Project so I could do with some tips on things to do in the area if you're happy to give any.

  10. I'm seeing them tonight so I had a looks at last night's set list figuring with the way he likes to change up the set list if he didn't play something last night then there's a good chance he will play it tonight. However fuck me last's night's setlist was so good with Wish, Closer, March Of The Pigs, Gave Up, The Perfect Drug, Heresy, Shit Mirror, Love Is Not Enough, Down In It, Copy Of A etc so that's a massive chunk of my favourites which sods law means he's not playing it tonight. Touchwood that means he's playing All The Love In The World, Terrible Lie, Survivalism, Ruiner, Echoplex, Right Where It Belongs, Last, Discipline and the super rare We're In This Together!

Turnstile could yet headline the Pit (sorry the FR) as there’s one band TBA.

On the subject of Idles in R+L, it’s strange that they haven’t played since they became big. The last time I can remember them playing was low down on the FR tent.

They we’re booked to play the cancelled  2020 though

Nah, Turnstile are back touring America after APE.

Idles would have the been exact type of act R&L would book and become synonymous with but as they aren’t a sound cloud rapper they can’t be arsed booking them now.

I think what's more important than co-headliner thing is to actually build bands by giving them good main stage slots. Crazy that Spiritbox didn't have one this year.

It's not just Download's responsibility and it would help to have a one day fest once a year too, but still they could do more.

R&L despite being a teen pop festival where the line up looks like they have thrown some kind of 20 sided D&D dice to book it are good at that. If there's someone new and being talked about then they chuck them early on the mainstage plus new bands don't have a robust catalogue so them playing for 30-45 mins actually works for them unlike giving Bury Tomorrow a 30min slot. But Download is just shit at it largely due to them not having their finger to the pulse of the UK rock scene in general.

There's definitely a need for a day fest somewhere in this country. There were so many big bands touring Europe but decided not to play the UK this year they could have chucked something on at the last minute. Something after the schools have closed in late Jul/Aug away from Download so they can pick up other bands touring Europe they wouldn't have and not compete with them. Maybe APE will start booking heavier acts as they have tried before with Bring Me, jumped on Turnstile and Idles who I would have pegged as R&L must haves this year (especially as they would have fit under Rage) and they almost got NIN until Trent had another kid.

Well done for spoiling it dickhead lol

The whole point is to change what you think is about to happen ffs...

Go back to watching some a bit more on your level 🙂

You're trying to make it sound like they highbrow cerebral thrillers, Tarantino makes fun live action cartoons but with swearing and blood.

  14. 11 minutes ago, Barry Fish said:

Its hard to get into this without doing spoilers 😛

I think its close enough for it to be so...

Sure, Tarantino only gets a few minor details in his films wrong like Sharon doesn't die and Hitler is murdered in the cinema. lol

I'm sure I read this somewhere but it was probably bullshit, that Corey selected Die Antwoord to sub them in '19 because he knew it would fuck people off. Corey selecting Nickelback as a sub for the same reason would be a very Corey thing to do.

Nickelback are the bigger band though. Slipknot wish they could support them on tour!

  16. 3 hours ago, Barry Fish said:

Why ?  Its based on something that actually happened ?

I don't really care about the misogyny issue myself but considering Tarantino isn't trying to stick with what actually happened I'm not sure thats's really a justifaction.

The past 5 line ups have only had 3 artists headline for the first time. 2 were Biffy and Muse who already established headliner status at other festivals and Ozzy which I feel like shouldn't count. In the same time frame Black Sabbath, Kiss and Ozzy have or will be "retiring". Linkin Park aren't probably going to return without Chester and it's debatable if The Prodigy would return to headline with Keith. Their headline pool is literally shrinking.

It's okay as Deep Purple, The Who and Nickleback are gonna headline in 2024! Wooo!

What's the deal with co-headliners, do both sets get cut short due to this?

At R&L one headlines at Reading and the other at Leeds. At others fests it's just a way to dress up the sub as being bigger than just a sub like when I saw The Black Keys and Prodigy co-headline at IOW or The Cult & Alice Cooper who did it as a tour. I have been seen a few bands like Thrice & Refused rotate who's on last depending on who's the bigger act in that specific country. They will normally have the same set length though.

Every now and then you will see a headliner but then the band under them is a co-headliner despite the other band not having the tag. lol

L+R seem to be doing a good job of killing off rock, Download just need to accept that they need to broaden out and be "the UK rock festival".

Royal Blood will headline Download in the next few years for better or worse, mark my words.

I mean Download wants to kill off rock too. They only just begrudging accept nu-metal as young people's music but anything newer muse die!

Allegedly whenever Copping gets a Foo Fighters type act to headlined in the past he gets burned a lot as they change their mind (which says more about Download's operation/admin side that they can't get these acts tied down imo) which is why he started leaning into the likes of KISS or Def Leppard as it's a big payday to them so they won't complain or change their mind. You can see that shift between the first 10 years and the last 10 years, they had the bulls to book Limp Bizkit as a headliner the first year.

Me playing fantasy booker I'd just split the days into old skool/straight rock regardless of age so acts like Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, Anthrax, Greta Van Fleet, Ghost etc. Then a day of more contemporary alt rock like Green Day, Idles, Slaves, Placebo, Muse etc the kind of stuff that use to get booked a lot at R&L. With the third day of the loud heavy shit like Slipknot, Parkway Drive, Gojira, Machine Head, KoRn etc. Mix up the second stage so it's a bit of everything and don't be scared to put upcoming bands on the mainstage like Code Orange are/were white hot so sticking them on low mainstage builds them up more and will have people curious enough to check them out when there's less notable names on in the day unlike sticking them to the smallest stage when the big names are on as no one checks them out. It's mental Bring Me have played 5 times but only once on the mainstage!

Rage Against The Machine are far bigger than Biffy and have a far bigger pull especially since they haven't played a gig in the UK for 10ish years? I anticipate a big crowd for both Leeds and Reading to see them.

I like your optimism even however their first UK gig will be Edinburgh which hasn't sold out as lickity split as some would have thought, they were hated on announcement by the tweens at R&L but still got tixs for Arctic Monkees & Dave plus the day is horribly booked so alot of people who want to see Rage are put off by shit like Willow Smith or Maneskin. There's multiple people in this forum who want to see Rage but aren't willing to deal with R&L to do it.

Thing is Biffy is a rock band at a rock festival. Rage is a rock band at a teen pop festival.

Just out of Nine inch Nails in Glasgow.

Holy Shit!! What a show!, no huge production just Two hours of total bangers!

anyone going to the the rest of the nights are in for one hell of a gig.

Sounds cool but it sucks there's no full stage production. My missus has never seen them before and I've been bigging them up with talk of rotting animals on a massive screen and sparkly laser lights.
