  1. No, No! But tell you what, I'd recommend listening to the great man on The Line-Up with Shaun Keaveny: Carl Cox - Apple Podcasts ... he was dead interesting. Proper mad muso.
  2. Hiya! I've written a book about my adventures running a Glasgow club night between 2003 to 2012. It's not too long, all killer no filler. More details are below. Thanks very much - if this isn't permitted of course just delete, and my apologies! John D. https://www.amazon.co.uk/RETIRED-TEENAGERS-Story-Glasgow-Night/dp/1739656202 “A rollicking good read about the ups and downs of club promotion. Highly enjoyable!” – JD TWITCH (OPTIMO ESPACIO) “It would appear that I missed out.” – JARVIS COCKER (PULP) “A great snapshot of a special time in the Glasgow music scene that brings to life those weird and wonderful nights where imagination and passion ran wild to create unforgettable memories – unless you’d had too much to drink.” – JOHN MCMUSTARD (COLONEL MUSTARD AND THE DIJON 5) Retired Teenagers tells how “Pin Up Nights” promoted performances by Guest DJs and live acts from around the world – including The National, Florence Welch, MGMT, Tony Wilson (Factory Records), Super Furry Animals and Wild Beasts – as well as Scottish stars of the future – including The Twilight Sad, Glasvegas, The Fratellis, Chvrches, and Frightened Rabbit. Between 2003 and 2012 Pin Ups carved its own unique niche, growing from a few friends in a pub basement, to staging chaotic and hilarious parties attended by thousands. Retired Teenagers is essential reading for fans of indie rock, synth pop and Glasgow nightlife in the noughties, as well as containing plenty of advice for anyone promoting their own events.
  3. Give the ones I've mentioned a listen, there is not a chance a 43 year old music fan has never heard them. Naive Melody especially, its a massive song. You might not recognise the song titles. Talking Heads are a bit like New Order that way ("Temptation" should probably have been "up down turn around" 😂)
  4. Looks to me like the undercards are now being properly filled out. Idles and Turnstile for the Gorillaz day make sense in terms of adding a couple of acts that will shift a decent number of tickets on their own. They probably also complement Gorillaz more than any of the other headliners. Presumably a "curates" day is a lot harder to pull together than most assume as Gorillaz didn't even really manage that when they stayed their own festivals a few years back in LA and Margate (not often those places are in the same sentence).
  5. Talking Heads are more like 6 - the ones you've mentioned but also Naive Melody (I DJd a wedding last night and it was specifically requested), And She Was, and Wild Wild Life. I'd bet most folk would know Burning Down The House as well. I feel like Arcade Fire have plausibly 2 or 3 on this sort of scale but I'm not sure what they objectively are. Power Out and Rebellion? (Everything Now is a dud and I don't think anyone enjoys it without thinking of Abba or wondering if the pan pipes are somehow taking the piss.) Funeral is a mighty artistic statement yeah but I don't think it blows fear of music and/or remain in light out of the water.
  6. I've seen AF many times and enjoy them a lot. However I think it's quite a stretch to compare them at all to Talking Heads. AF have much less "crossover" hits and they've also probably come over a shorter time frame - 8 years? The new song that I've heard sounds like an average tune is being disguised with a fair amount of bluster.
  7. Aye, I listen to 6 Music and go to their festivals and also the WHP, love a disco biscuit but only outwith Westminster...😀
  8. Thanks very much, very interesting and makes things clearer. If you're a local promoter and one of these gigs blows your gig out of the water, that's just bad luck?
  9. In my old age I find myself as interested in how music events are organised as in the music itself. I'm not some BBC basher. 6 Music is a mixed bag but absolutely home to some great broadcasters/DJs.
  10. Hello all, I asked these questions a few years back but I don't think I got replies. (Just listening to Lauren Laverne from yesterday playing live songs by Wet Leg and Johnny Marr from the 6 Music Festival in Cardiff, which has reminded me.). I remain curious about how the 6 Music Festival is organised and funded. Is it priced to break even? What if it loses money? It sounds like Liverpool in 2019 didn't sell out. I've looked at BBC annual reports and it's not explained. Is it outsourced to a local promoter - how does the BBC have the expertise otherwise? If I was a promoter in the area and the BBC turned up with these kind of line ups to clash with an event I was already promoting, I would be pretty upset. On the other hand, is it being outsourced and do local promoters have a chance to make a few quid? I attended the first one in Manchester (2014?) and it seemed like it was an excuse for the station to have a party. The venue was the Victoria Warehouse which was obviously a choice inspired by WHP (the Warehouse Project), but unfortunately the venue was unsuited to live bands (I'm not sure it was thought through too carefully). You had (for example) The National playing in a huge hall and James Blake playing at exactly the same time in a small room. It was overall OK - it felt like all the DJs were in the same place and the atmosphere as fun. I met Shaun Keaveny and had a laugh. I attended the Glasgow one a few years later by which time it had changed into a "series of related gigs in different venues" format.
  11. Has reaction been muted? I think its surprisingly good. I'm a bit thrown by the prominence of Stromae though, is it because its so near to France?
  12. They did 2 nights at the o2, one was free for NHS workers. The reviews were great yes. It took a while, but live they are now an incredible act. Their APE undercard is tasteful but don't imagine it's doing its bit to sell loads of tickets.
  13. I see Gorillaz, Damon Albarn, Mike Smith (Damon's musical director) are advertising their day today on Instagram as "UK festival exclusive". Bit random, someone at APE maybe asking a favour? They have loads of international dates already and I don't think anyone was expecting them to play much in the UK this year.
  14. I don't think Bjork was replaced in 2012, but she cancelled with about a month to go. They offered day ticket refunds. Doubt they would do that now.
  15. I assumed Tame Impala was "weaker" because it's a Thursday. Is it the same price though? I agree wit the general sentiment that it feels like 3 or so good days are being stretched over several more.
  16. It looks the strongest day to me. Will probably go to it. I would go to gorillaz but my pals coming with me from Scotland will probably just want a wee Friday London pub crawl. Who are your field day undercard standouts, out of interest?
  17. Disappointed about Massive attack. The "lots of headliners already" chat is a bit misleading as what the bill actually has is a bunch of "quite big but not massive" acts which probably don't rank above each other, meaning lots of names get "headliner" status. Also LOL-ing at the idea Arctic Monkeys, or Portishead, or Pulp, or Rosalia would scramble to put together a live show to replace Massive Attack... YYYs seems most likely, and would be good, don't know what other dates they have, pretty sure they have a few in England. I feel like Interpol follow me around so really hoping it's not them 🙂
  18. Genuine question, I've been 6 times and I only remember walking back into town once. I err usually have a pretty good time and am still at the forum round dawn on each day. Does the subway run from 5am on Friday and Saturday morning, and all through the night and morning on Sunday morning?
  19. Is secret set on a Saturday at noon and/or Sunday early evening at the Park now A Thing? Can't see The 1975 wanting to do either of these daylight slots. Not sure what would be in it for Flo either. I'm not convinced Bicep are bigger than Justice. Justice always seemed to get slots that felt a bit bigger than their popularity. If Bicep get to headline WH they will be doing well. The "Olivia Rodrigo on the Pyramid" chat looks right to me. Will be interesting to see where Lorde and Wolf Alice end up. New material hasn't done Lorde any favours. Subbing the Pyramid would be the fest giving Wolf Alice a significant leg-up IMO. The XX subbed Friday in 2017 off the back of an arena tour. I thought they were great, not sure everyone agreed though.
  20. I like them, but Wolf Alice headlining is actually more mental than the Foals headlining chat which used to go around. 😂 Headlining the Other would actually be the fest giving them a significant leg-up.
  21. Hello all just to say my brother isn't using his tickets for tonight. If you want them send me a message and I will email the 2 tickets to you.
  22. Hi all just to say I gave 2 tickets to my big brother, who lives in Leeds and bizarrely said he had never seen new order. He got me into new order by playing Regret and Republic non stop around 1994. The other 2 tickets have gone to Forum members. Thanks for all the DMs about hotels, very kind.
  23. Not sure where the correct place in the forum to put this would be, but I have 4 tickets for this gig on Friday that I am not going to use and haven't been able to sell on Twickets. (Am doing the Right Thing and going to a pal's post-vaccines rearranged Stag Do instead.) I am running the Manchester marathon on Sunday 10th October and can't find cheap accommodation (i.e. everything I see is £120+). Anyone who DMs me with some inside info about bargain hostels or hotels can have the 4 New Order tickets. Or even if you don't have inside info but just ask nicely, you can have them with my best wishes. 😄
  24. I have been to APE a few times, yes there is LOTS of talking. Can be annoying if its someone you really want to listen to. Memorably had the same problem at Primavera Sound during Brian Wilson though, in 2016. So I don't think it's exclusive to London. Saw a clip on twitter of Jamie XX mixing idontknow into Weird Fishes. Bit mad but fun. Apparently he also played stuff like Ripgroove. I'm not sure a DJ Set on that big stage works. A tent would have been better.
  25. https://thebigfeastival.com/feastival-from-the-farm-the-movie Alex James looks to have out on a bit (a lot) of weight in lockdown. I was vaguely aware he ran a festival with Jamie Oliver but I didn't know it had become an annual thing. It really doesn't look like my cup of tea at all, but fair play if he has established it and pulled a crowd. Has anyone here been? Is it as white and middle/upper class as it appears🤣 😬? (Skip to 38 mins for some of Alex's chat with Jo Whiley - he is a big charmer as usual.)
