A brief history of Radio Avalon and Worthy FM, if anyone is interested...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Avalon

Also, Fred Williams, who was station manager from 1992 (RIP FRED 2004) would be furious if he could hear the way the station comes over now. Radio Avalon was his baby, he knew exactly what everyone wanted to hear and how to deliver it. G1T I suggest you guys get together and listen to a few recordings of the old Radio Avalon and learn from it.

I tell you what I did like, the videos posted in the week or so beforehand on the website showing the condition of the site etc - really helped to get the excitement levels rising.

I agree with the traffic updates - from what I heard on Wednesday morning stuck in traffic, 'all routes to site are busy' didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know, so rendered itself a bit useless IYSWIM?

"Some of the Worthy FM crew were on Radio Avalon too you know, and without wanting to go into the details, there are reasons why Radio Avalon is no longer running."

Yes. I do know. I'm Fred's ex partner, we have a son between us.

By 1992 the station had become a legal and recognised RSL station, with the main transmitters supplied by Phoenix Communications and Radica. The station had a loose format, with named presenters doing regular shows. Over the years, many guest presenters have huddled inside the Radio Avalon cabin, situated near the farmhouse at the top of Big Ground; such names include BBC Radio 2's Janice Long, Radiohead and a treasured programme from 1995 hosted by John Peel. After a classic three night tenure from The Orb in 1992, the night-time sessions were steered in a more dance and ambient orientated direction.
