Security

What did everybody else think of the security...did anybody see any?? The crush on the way out at the end of Foo's didn't look like it was being supervised at all...yet outside the first campsite there was a bunch of 4 or 5 if them standing around laughing...no checking if people going in the campsites actually had camping tickets.

I really worry about next year when they increase the capacity by 20k...unless they are actually for support staff as they claim...it was already ridiculously rammed for the size of the site

Some great music though...Bibelots, Our Fold, Seasick Steve, Foos, Pulp, Ian Broudie to name a few

Our experience of the "security" was very different.

On Sunday morning whilst myself and around 7 mates where sitting drinking and minding our own business, a land rover with 6 big security guys dressed in black combat gear with no company logo on it pulled up alongside and aggressivly threw one guy against the land rover and started searching him.

They didnt say a thing. They didnt say who they were, what they were doing or why they were searching us.

When i asked what was going on i was told to "F@£K off" and that i was next. I asked why they wanted to search me and was told i had no right to know. i asked for a police presence and was told i had no right to have one. When i argued that i did. They got on the radio and another 2 land rovers with more paramilitary style security got out. (seems a little excessive having 18 security guards to search 8 peaceful people).

i was aggressivly bundled into a land rover and driven to the police compound on the other side of site. All the while with the security trying to intimidate me and order me around in the back.

I arrived at the police compound and explained what had gone on to the police officer who luckily was a very nice man and could see that the security were in the wrong and were possibly abusing their power.

He explained to them that i had every right to know why i was being searched and also to have a police presence.

The security quickly dissapeared, i was searched and released imediatley.

I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS FESTIVAL!

    • Policing is very relaxed, provided you stay within your lines I'd say. I don't think we're supposed to have an event shelter as well as a tent next to our van, but we've done it without issue for years. It's a happy vibe up there.
    • Do feel a lot more cynical about the Mercury now. Given the awards show is now an arena event, there's clearly a pressure on them to nominate mainstream acts in order to sell tickets for it. And not saying that Jade and Knats don't deserve to be nominated (haven't listened to either), but the fact the event is in Newcastle can't have nothing to do with that... (not to mention Fender winning last year, which frankly was a joke)    Hard not to agree with this: https://www.clashmusic.com/features/this-years-mercury-prize-is-a-pivot-towards-the-mainstream/
