If I'm honest, I think such performances are always shit. Usually because they pick a soppy slow song and it's a lowest common denominator thing with all those performing. Either that or there's obvious one-upmanship on stage which gets tiresome quickly.

I am wondering if there might be one of those gala type performances next year - the ones they used to hold at Wembley during things like Nelson Mandella's birthday where a house band of stars fronted a medley of different singers - it was very Eighties to do this.

It would probably work on the Pyramid, where a host of previous acts could all get together and it's an extension of the Africa express type format that worked a few year's ago.

I was only 6 or 7 when Mandela's 70th birthday gig was on, but I can still remember watching Dire Straits play with Clapton.

I think that gig actually got me into music. I've still got it on a very old VHS tape somewhere.
