The organiser of Reading And Leeds Festivals has denied they are ditching the event's rock heritage despite only having indie bands headline this year.

As first revealed by NME last week, Radiohead, Kings Of Leon and Arctic Monkeys will headline the August Bank Holiday event (August 28-30), meaning a big rock act is not topping the bill.

Some fans have complained about the lack of a "Rock day" with one arguiung on the NME.com blog "I'm sorry but Reading is a ROCK festival, always has been," while another moaned: "Rock day seems to have vanished!"

Even Yeah Yeah Yeah's Nick Zinner, jokingly joined the debate. "As a metal fan I will miss rock day," he told NME, "but I guess I could grow my hair long in time for Donington."

However festival chief Melvin Benn insists rock will be never respresented this year.

"There was never a pre-ordained plan that said we would have a rock day," he told NME.

"It's what's around that's most suitable for us at that particular time. AC/DC would love to have played, but they have got commitments in the United States at the same time."

He added: "People who say, 'It isn't very rock-orientated' - certainly compared to previous years - will be right. However you'll find that there will be some very special additions to the bill that will be some very special additions to the bill that will lay those concerns to rest!".
