All of this is a reflection of the state of the music industry over the last 5-10 years. There have been very few new great bands, and those that had the potential never quite fulfilled their true potential. I take Kasabain as an example, after seeing them at Glasto in 2005 I genuinely thought they could be the next big band. They were immense. But they peaked with their first album, and failed to improve with their following albums imo. Now they perform at every festival there is, over and over again - everyone has seen them now and are bored with them I think. There isnt a lot new bands out there to compete for headline slots. Killers are another example of this. They seem to produce a great album then stay there so as to appeal to the masses, and regurgitate the same old stuff over and over again.
How many bands these days actually improve with later albums, very few (Elbow being the one exception). The great bands improve and develop with later albums and do not sit and cash in on their first album
Tragically I cannot see much out there at the moment that will change but I do think it is a cyclical thing, so the good old days I am sure will return again... at some point.. Hopefully. Until then we will have to make do with the 'headliners who never quite fulfilled their potential but now headline every festival there is because they are the best there is at the moment' sprinkled with a heavy dose of 'nostalgic 80s and 90s 'legends' to fill the rest of the slots and to sell the tickets'
This is only my opinion!

Just listening to a bit of Polyphonic Spree, love to hear these guys agin! Not sure if they are still all together or have played Bestival before. They would be an ideal band to have I reckon

I tought it deserved a mention that I think the line up this year is great. Chose Bestival this year for three reasons, no Glasto, Sigur Ros and the non music stuff. I haven't regretted my decision and really can't wait til September, especial when I read the dross that is the line up for t in the park and, I suspect v and reading as well. I only need a couple of great bands to have a great time, and it doesn't need to be headliners. I love line ups for the bands I haven't heard of, and I love listening to new stuff. FFS I can't be arsed to watch kasabian again. Nor stone roses. Give me Sigur Ros any day, truly awesome booking. And don't get me started on Gary Numan ans Bellowhead! Well done Betival, I really can't wait for September!
Bring on Arcadia again as well!

Ahh what does he know?!
Probably more than me
Arse

Before?

Sunday will be arcade fire, before Sigur ros
Probably
Please

I'd much rather have Chems. Orbital are good though. Just... Chems!!!
I just think Orbital are very 90's whereas Chems have carried on being current, if only in name & singles... IN MY OPINION.
I'm 24, & think almost 100% of my friends would rather have The Chemical Brothers.
I'm not saying Orbital are bad, just Chemical Brothers will have more buzz & shift (if perhaps slightly but I'm thinking of the age group of most of last years Besti demographic) more tickets.
-
Look on the bright side, if we don't get the Chems then we still have Orbital who are equally immense. We can't lose!
-
I cant think who the Sunday headliner might be. I think Sigur Ros are easily big enough to headline themselves and will produce an immense set. Following that to end the festival could be a damp squib if they don't get it right - it has to be Arcade Fire, for an uplifting close to the festival. Bring it on!

Buying my tickets for Bestival. Oh bugger, wrong forum...
-
How have they come back bigger? Bestival headliners are usually the same size as the subs on the Pyramid at Glasto... and last time NO played Glasto (in 05) they subbed the Pyramid.
And when I saw them at Reading in 93, they headlined the main stage.

Goldfrapp would indeed be brilliant. Can't believe I've not managed to see them at a fest since 2004!
-
Love to hear some filthy electronica from Goldfrapp again, I would have though they were well suited to a festival like Bestival, and they have a new greatest hits album out now. Would be great to heart some of the older stuff again like Utopia, Lovely Head, Crystalline green and Black Cherry. I am not sure if they will be doing a greatest hits tour any time soon? Probably not

Its the other entertainment that has attracted me to Bestival and convinced me to book a ticket before the line up was announced, the late night entertainment is my favourite thing about Glastonbury and the lack of it is what is starting to put me off paying £200 to go to the other big UK festivals. I'm more excited about this stuff than I am about most of the bands.

If you're travelling on foot what time your ferry's booked for doesn't matter, you can go any time.
-
I read somewhere that Gary Numan will sub Hot Chip on the Thursday? Does anyone know what time Numan would likely be on, I am desperate to see the legend again. I booked the ferry (for 1.30pm on Thursday) and ticket not realising this so need to have time to get there and pitch before the master performs! Cant risk missing him!

Elbow have headlined before so that must rule them out...
-
I am going for Elbow as the Friday headliner, not sure about Sunday, whoever it is it is going to be a big ask following a band like Sigur Ros. Arcade Fire possibly? Maybe Prince?
-
Does anyone know if/when the early bird tickets stop being sold? We are keen to go but there are a few logistical issues to deal with first. Ideally I want to get those issues resolved first (ferries, when to go, etc.) before I buy the tickets, but now at the risk of missing out completely. Not sure if they will stop the early bird tickets sales soon if a big announcement is imminent?
I reckon tickets will sell pretty quickly this year, the 'undercard' is looking amazing at the moment, without any headliners. And I suspect a lot of Glasto regulars, like me, will give it a go this year.
Sorry to put this in the headliners thread but I didn't think it justified a thread on its own
Cheers!

Yes there are too many pointless posts in this thread

Any ideas where the strong rumour for Elbow came from. I can see them headlining easily this year, they are now big enough to headline a festival like latitude, and would be a real crowd pleaser for the Henham crowd. An ideal headliner. I thought they would just about guarantee a sell out again thi year.
Now waiting for kraftwerk to be confirmed as a second headliner! Not sure about the third.
Actually. the third headliner will be the Flaming Lips - I can really see that, they would be well suited to Latitude and would be an awesome addition!

Yeah Swedish house mafia would be good, but I am not convinced they would get a massive crowd closing a big stage at Glasto
Grovove armada will always attract a massive crowd, they have a history with the festival and have always gone down really well.
I would love a trio of At the River, shaking that ass and superstylin' would be immense if unoriginald. Thrw in Chicago and I would be a happy man
-
I'd go for 2 and a smaller stage. I've seen Radiohead and although good, I'm not a fan really and no desire to see again.
Something out the blue, if Pendulum get a good slot, as do The Prodigy and Groove Armada, as would probably Chase and Status. What about Swedish House Mafia?

I think that the creativity is still there to some extent. Go back to Kasabian, they were original and creative in 2004. Part of the problem is there is so much money around nowadays, so many festivals out there for bands to headline at, that bands do not need to develop any more - they can live of one or two albums for the rest of their lives. When their were fewer festivals around, these bands would have had to develop and improve over time before they were ever considered headline material. And they would not have had as made as much money from one album and the subsequent numerous headline performances.
No more 80s and 90s retro headliners please, I want 70s retro headliners. Kraftwerk please. Again
