    1992- Shakespear's sister headlined.

    Female pop duo.

I know they were a flash in the pan musically. 1 massive single.

But pop acts had headlined way before Kylie was due to headline.

Kind of proves the point I was making about the stature though, right?

    Not happy with that?

Let's try Bowie 2000, a bigger star than Madge or EJ

    Stevie Wonder 2010

    Bob Dylan 1998

Bruce Springsteen 2009 (dull as dishwater but still a huge star)

Bowie was a low ebb commercially in 2000. Springsteen was always more likely than the others because guitars and his politics. Both he and Stevie are after Jay Z. The actual best comparison would be Kylie in 2005 but she’s always been more U.K.-centric than Madonna and isn’t as big.

If you genuinely think Madonna was considered a likely booking back in 2007 or 2008 all I can say is….OK. If you don't think there’s been a change in the stature and type of headliners Glastonbury has been attracting in the last 15 years again, OK.

    2008

Jay Z - One of the world's best-selling music artists with 140 million records sold, Jay-Z has won 24 Grammy Awards, the tenth-most of all time and most awarded for any hip hop artist jointly with Kanye West. He has been awarded the NAACP's President's Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, a Sports Emmy Award, and been nominated for a Tony Award. Ranked by Billboard and Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest artists of all time, Jay-Z was the first rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the first solo living rapper inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2013.

Well yes. Thats where it started to change. That came right out of left field, caused huge controversy and still had literally nobody going ‘they’ll get Madonna next year now’

Course. I was similar with Elto last year. Not for me, guv, but one heck of a booking for Mick E.

Incredible how far they’ve come on that score. The idea of Madge (or Elton) doing Glastonbury would have been laughable 15 years ago

Aye - but that's different to trying to prove its a bad booking by digging up YouTube clips.

That just feels like an annual tradition now. Macca at the Olympics, Dill Danding, Axl at Lisa Marie's funeral etc.

It’s a monstrous booking and even if she honks her way through it like an asthmatic duck that will always be the case.

We've done this discussion ad nauseum over the last few years (Macca, Elton, etc, delete as applicable) but in terms of globally recognised and established artists from the past 40 years, there aren't many bigger bookings than Madonna. At least none that have either one-and-done or are no longer touring. It would be a f**king coup as significant as any booking they've ever made. I'll probably be elsewhere on site, but put some respect in her name.

    Well exactly

We don't live in time machines. If they get this over the line its the biggest coup for the festival since the Stones. There are no bigger challenges out there. Incredible scenes if she's confirmed.

It’s possible to get that it’s a huge booking for the festival and be pleased for Emily and co….and not personally be in any way excited.

She hardly sang live during her last shows. More than half of her vocals came from a tape, sadly.

Nobody will notice. I went off the idea of going to see her after watching a YouTube video but that was because of the setlist, pacing, too many snippets and remixes etc. Nobody in the Pyramid field will care about her vocals or if she’s miming or not. See Elton, Axl, Macca etc. You don’t go to see Madge for a vocal tour de force, she was never a particularly good live singer even in her prime.

Madge was not good according to pretty much every live report I've read though.

Friend of mine went and didn’t rate it. I’ll pass as the setlist isn’t what I’d want and it’s a lot of snippets and remixes when she does play stuff I like. She will go over well though.l especially if she’s on Sunday. A huge name that not many people will otherwise see and she’ll play some of the hits.

Yeah a suede/ the national/ Madonna Sunday clash would kill me. I bet that's what happens.

Does seem a likely possibility at that point. Just need a Jungle or LCD Soundsystem on WH to get me properly confused.

Suede are playing with the Manics on the Friday and Saturday of Glastonbury weekend. I don't see any way they wouldn't headline Woodsies, if they played that stage on the Sunday. Their 2015 set was unbelievable.

It was superb. Would love to see them on the Sunday even if it sets up a horror clash for me with The National.

Spose. 2024-era Springsteen a bit of a snoozer also. Who am I kiddin'.

Not quite what he was but a greatest hits would still be a smasheroo on the Pyramid. That doesn’t seem likely though, and he’s been quite open about taking the money on this tour.

Find it strange that she slipped through the cracks since - particularly this year. Springsteen too. Wild that they're both **literally there** and the festival didnt bag 'em both.

With her it’s then massive scale stage set up. With Bruce it’s the coin.

Is it bollocks, it’s one of the e-fests myths. Given the small number of Sunday tickets available for locals (can’t remember if it’s 5k or 10k), I really don’t think they’re going to engineer the Sunday line up to cater for them

Michael used to talk about it back when he was running the festival. I think the ‘Sunday legends’ slot came out of that thinking. Their actions never really matched his words when it came to who they booked on Sundays in the 00’s but it was a thing.
