Interesting that the French are putting up similar case numbers to us with half the testing and far less deaths.

All that snail munching must be good for the immune system.

This sort of stuff goes on at every local authority up and down the country - granted they aren't giving the contracts to their mates (mostly). They are brought in to mask the inability of the semi senior management. Everyone needs a fall guy.

It doesnt anymore. The changes to IR35 Tax regs closed that little earner

Reading Stasiland by Anna Funder. Embarrassed to say i have been reading it for months. Really good and interesting but keep finding other things to do. Looking at it now but a peanut butter, hazelnut and caramel brownie milk stout while listening to the super furry animals has won tonight’s battle

    That was a battle?

Does anyone else have to finish a book even if you are really not enjoying it? I hate the fact I can't stop reading a book once I've started even if I think it's boring/ not my thing etc.

Absolutely. A mix of "I've paid for it so I'll finish it" (I also take the same view with Television and Pies) and some wierdly misguided view that the author put loads of effort into it so somehow I'm letting them down.

@gigpusher That's a great list! I've mentioned on here before but I just set myself a challenge to read 52 books this year, and I'm 75% of the way there. It's made me realise that I am a very target driven person 😂 I've been wondering how to keep up my good progress this year in the next, but without it just being the same thing. I'll definitely apply those topics to each month and try to read at least one book that fits for each one.

I too joined Goodreads and my 'want to read' list is growing exponentially. I really should challenge myself to add no more to it until I've read all of the ones I've got listed there!

52 books in a year is mighty impressive. Most of my reading is in bed so depending on work I'll be lucky  if I do more than a few pages before falling asleep.

  6. Another cheery read (although Id really recommend it) is The Volunteer by Jack Fairweather. Its about Witold Pilecki who was part of the Polish underground. He broke into Auchwitz to gather information on what was happening and organised the resistance inside the camp. He then broke back out when he believed his information wasnt being acted upon by Churchill.

Absolutely harrowing book as much is either about Auchwitz/ Buchenwald or the Siege Of Warsaw of course. But man - the guy was some hero.

Currently reading Utopia Avenue by David Mitchell. It's an excellent tale of a fictional 60s band and much less fantastical than most of his work. It somewhat stretches credulity by the sheer number of famous names from the 60s the various band members seem to constantly bump into but is certainly a thoroughly good read.

Cant make my mind up about Mitchell. Enjoyed Cloud Atlas - but have kept trying other ones and given them up as pretentious nonsense and not that well written. Bought this one from local bookshop but finding it hard to get the enthusiasm to start it.

I am now on slaying the badger which is another cycling book it's about the greatest tour de France in 1986, so far so good

My favourite book. One of the few I can read and re-read

Is Rage worth reading? Was going to get it but have read three on Trump so thought I may have done it (though now want to read Mary Trump's too for a diff angle).

It is - if only that Woodward is such a great journalist that he quotes and you feel you can trust his sources (which are often the orange one himself) and hes so readable. Mary Trumps is also worth a read not so much for the Donald material - but the baleful influence of the Mum and Dad and how it fucked the rest of the family up.

Whilst of course a single case is one case too many, 13,972 cases today is way better than I would have expected for today this time last week.  It is within our power to get through this thing.

Optimism. I'm desperately clutching at it after today. Thanks

Sadiq Khan has been a total disgrace recently. I am tempted to draw a cock and balls on my ballot sheet for London mayor.

Not necessarily disagreeing with  you (though I probably am as I like Sadiq) can you give me some examples of the decisions you are unhappy with?

    Genuine question.

  13. The last TV Debate is going to be a real shit show. Trump continue to reap his own whirlwind appealing only to his base which can only mean he'll lose next month. He's got to go for Bidens throat. There arent enough undecided's - he needs to turn Biden voters. Christ knows what lies and crap he'll try to throw at Biden

yes...but Biden could win the popular by a larger percentage but still end up losing...

We may end up being thankful to Covid in one tiny regard if it results in the orange one losing office
