One friend, who was champion at who can piss highest up the wall, told us to stand outside and watch whilst he went for a wee. A few seconds later a yellow stream of piss was being squirted over the wall into the cubicle behind. You should have heard the shouting and swearing. We were all rolling about, luckily it was a small lady and not some big hairy arsed ogre.

Anyway; why I posted was that I had a theory that a lot of the 'mess' on seats was actually from women squatting/hovering over the seat.

With the presumption that most men just pissing would be at the urinals and are overall generally less 'picky' about such things so more likely to be sitters.

However, as things stand; seems it's pretty equal proportions between men and women.

Me? A quick wipe (always make sure I have a bit extra toilet roll than needed) and then a sitter - if I've sat in a cubicle, the next occupant will get a shiny ready-to-use seat :).

I've wondered before about some sort of 'deposit' scheme which worked with cameras that took a quick picture when the door was opened to leave - you lost your deposit on some sort of swipe-card if it was messier than when you entered. Could even let people 'earn' by tidying up other people's mess. Of course, a whole lot of money, time and hassle for the sake of making the festival slightly more pleasant, so can't see it being justifable.

My point was more that it's a generally absurd idea. :)

The cost of setting up and maintaining a sophisticated camera and swipe card system across that much countryside would be bonkers. You'd also have to develop some sort of software that can analyse pictures and judge what is acceptable and what isn't. I doubt anyone's made such software for festival toilets, so the development costs would be huge too. How would the cameras not get nicked or vandalised either?

I could go on.

It wouldn't be for all toilets; just a selection. I was thinking of a self-reporting kinda system where if it wasn't acceptable, the next person could press a button to 'report'. Though, I don't think with modern pattern recognition software it would be too complex. Should be quite easy to send borderline ones to a human operator to make final adjudication, which could get through a lot in not much time.

Oh and yes, fully aware that it's a pretty ridiculous idea that won't happen in reality... at least not now; because I'm not the one £160m better off :(... now if I HAD been... ;)

At Sonisphere you could pay £2 to use (I presume) a clean toilet... so there obviously is SOME workable business model around this industry!

Oh and that was a minor aside to the main poll which I was actually genuinely interested in, to see if it was women that could be blamed for the dirty toilets they stereotypically so hate :).

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
