I dont think intelligent music is pretentious. I just think people who like intelligent music are often pretentious, cause they like to think it makes them better.

how do you know that this is the reason that someone likes a certain band?

i've never heard anyone say they like a band for this reason.

oh.....and isn't using the word pretentious as a derogatory term, to describe someone actually quite......

pretentious?

perhaps they want to challenge themselves.

don't get me wrong i do really enjoy blink 182, the mad caddies, seth rogen films, dan brown books and other fun art forms.

don't you ever like to stimulate yourself with radiohead, a darren aronofsky film or an ian mcewan book (i'm not hugely cultured myself before we get too many 'guffaws' at these examples!)?

Nah, what would be the fun in that?

Someone has to point out that just because a band have a cult following, doesn't mean they're good! :P

Deathcab for me fall under the same bracket as Arcade Fire - I'm sick of people w*nking over them when they're not actually that good!

But really, we're just mellow, and he's just heartless :P

It's not our fault we're more cultured than him.

Please note, that was a joke, I can't imagine anyone being less cultured than me.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to imply that you were off your rocker, and I love that turn of phrase haha.

I can understand why people would think Death Cab are a bit bland, but I don't just like them because they're popular.

They're popular because I like them :P

I like death cab. Im just saying. Alot of people seem to think it makes thme beetter. Such as who ever said you just dont get them cause they are intelligent, or something along those lines. You must be really up your own arse to say that.

Dont get me wrong, i like gay artsy films, music, as well as limp bizkit and naked gun. Just to point out that they are intelligent and use that as a reason why someone doesnt like them, when it could just be they dont think they sound good, seems pretty pretentious to me

Muse fans too! (Incoming!)

I'd like to point out I like Death Cab, Radiohead and Muse. But I agree with the holier-than-thou fans thing. Not all of them, just quite a few.

Muse's "Rock for Intelligent People" slogan (unofficial albeit) is proof enough.

This thread is getting pretty similar to the Neil Young one on the IOW forum, but more polite and intelligent ;)

Never come across Death Cab before, but I reckon I'm a convert. Anyone think they sound a bit like the Lightening Seeds and Travis ?

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
