The worst clash for me would be Ville Vallo vs Pendulum vs Andrew WK. Not seen the former or latter. Personally I don't think Andrew WK would close out a stage though and after last time I think they go on the Zippo.

Andrew WK? Is he playing? Or are you just going by the guessed line up earlier in this thread?

Stand corrected on AC/DC, for some reason I thought they'd done Download multiple times

To be fair, they did play a few times at Donington when it was called Monsters of Rock before Download took over so you may have got mixed up with that.

Saying that, the first one was in 1980 so 3 or 4 times in 43 years isn’t that often haha.

what do you think brought about your hatred of older people?

Haha, no hatred of older people, in fact I’m heading that way myself.

Just that after 35+ years of festivaling, I’d rather see some newer acts than the same old artists who I’ve seen many times in their peak still trying to do it in their 70s.

As earlier stated, this is more of a problem at Download due to the restricted genre options compared to Glastonbury.

Having Elton headline for the first time ever is a bit different to having Kiss-Aerosmith-AC/DC-Black Sabbath on a seemingly rotating loop

I was more taking about their ages rather than the repeat bookings.

For the record, I’m not defending Download, I’m as fed up as anyone with the pensioners headlining and am delighted that there be some people under 60 on the main stage this year.

To be fair, Download has less options than Glastonbury though.

(Side note, fair point about Sabbath, Aerosmith and Kiss but AC/DC have only played once in Download’s 20 year history)

Missed the download bit, but not the dinosaur bit

Yeah, I don’t think Glastonbury are any better than Download in regards to having ageing rockers in their 70s headlining. One is as bad as the other.

The biggest load of cringe I've ever seen in my life. And the worst part is that they probably did this because their record label demanded it. Pure irony if so.

Changing the name so that nobody knows that we are all slaves to system is the biggest "look away shrug shoulders" I've seen somebody that thought they made it do to appease the powers that be.

Because, let's be real -- they did not change the name because people told them that its offensive to the slaves of 300 years ago, when the word Is in the dictionary and represents the same meaning it did when they named themselves that.

Was there any genuine problems or an major fuss with people complaining about their name?
All the articles I’ve seen have quoted the same one or two tweets by the same people (who seem not to know the know why they are called Slaves)

Its hard to believe that anyone is genuinely offended once they know the real reason behind their name and it seems the band have tried to solve a problem that didn’t really exist.

I still remember when this line-up dropped 15+ years ago and, despite the Pumpkins playing who of course I was excited to be finally seeing, feeling very underwhelmed, and thinking it was the weakest line-up the festival ever had.

    Leeds-2007.jpg

We are light years away from anything even on this level.

    Yeah I remember this well.

Ash had a huge crowd but I think a lot were only there because they weren’t Razorlight, haha.

The first time I saw Enter Shikari

Jummy Eat World in their traditional 5th on the main stage slot and Kings of Leon back when they were good.

Biffy in the tent, Chilis infamous ‘jam’ in their headline slot.

Stayed on the main stage all day on Sunday, something I probably haven’t done at Reading ever since haha.

In much better news, the boys are back in town under a new name

They used to say that Slaves was named after us all being slaves to the grind as opposed to actual real slaves.

Not sure how loud the complaints about the name were as I’d only heard to odd snippet here and there, but I suppose it’s up to them if they want to change it.

One things for sure in my opinion, we can talk all day about whether they should have changed their name or not but it won’t take away from the fact that ‘soft play’ is a terrible new name.

Yes. What they have done is essentially see the market for a part of Readings previous, see the market for what would have been V Festival and link them together. It's a little bit like Download booking to make a point of stopping the idea of a V Fest return close to Reading taking numbers. As right now, V Festival would sell as well as it ever has.

The people complaining about the lack of rap, go to Wireless, that is what it is there for.

We’ve come full circle from rap fans telling people complaining about lack of rock to go to Download haha.

Just as an aside we don't need to get in a debate over this but I'd say there are more than 15% Scots. Both days I attended this year I couldn't look anywhere without seeing a Scottish football strip, felt like a very strong contingent.

Good point, absolutely loads of Wales football shirts and flags too.

Either way, it’s definitely was less than 90% from England which is the post I was replying to.

( are you THAT sure R&L international contingent is small... ? it is a famous fest', only time I've been there in 2017 there was many nationalities represented.. )

ANYWAY I'm not stubborn, if you're right and 90% of the crowd is from England, then The Killers might be a better booking for R&L

I’d say that roughly 75% of the crowd is from England and 15% from Wales in Reading and 15% from Scotland in Leeds.

    The rest is from overseas.

Haven’t gotten round to Parkway Drive as of yet but definitely will do. Not ever listened any of their albums so will be a first for me

In that case you may as well start with the new one. Even if it’s not their best it’s probably a good gateway album in to the band.

It’s definitely bland compared to Holy Hell which IMO is their best work but for some unbeknown reason I keep going back to it. Probably because I just lap up absolutely anything a band ever releases if I like them 😁

Same here, despite it not being as good as previous albums, I keep listening to it so it seems I like it better than I’m telling myself haha.

    Same for Parkway Drive

Have been following the topic for a while but decided to join the discussion.

I absolutely do not understand the hate for the double mainstage concept on this forum. It works amazingly on Graspop and Hellfest for example.

I see a lot of people on here asking for new headliners, younger headliners etc. double mainstage is the way to do this. You would get to see a lot of amazing headliner shows from bands that you normally would not. It does not matter that it is not 2 huge headliners, the chance to see younger bands given the opportunity to show their headline show even though they aren’t headliner status yet give full blown headliner shows is amazing. I see people criticizing bookings like Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Ozzy, Kiss etc but just imagine that after these ancient bands are done with their set you get to finish the day with a younger more exciting band like Parkway Drive, Lamb of God, Deftones, BMTH, In flames, Amon Amarth, Korn etc etc.

People are complaining that BMTH were not given the chance to headline a long time ago, the reason that this has not happened is that there is only one mainstage. Imagine having Iron maiden from 21:00-23:00 and then after that having a full blown headliner set by BMTH after that to finish the night.

I don’t see the issue with having more insane headline worthy sets in the dark without losing anything.

As someone that visited Graspop a lot, the headline shows that I remember from Graspop were not the fossils of Scorpions or Def Leppard or whatever, but the headline sets of Parkway Drive, Lamb of god or Korn that followed after. The fact that they were not the biggest band on the bill does not matter.

There is a curfew for Download so they couldn’t have a band play after the headliners.

I’ll show my age here. But at Ozzfest 2000 and 2001 at Milton Keynes they had side by side stages and it was brilliant. Didn’t miss a band, same with Big day out 99. Always liked the idea of staggered bands and side by side. Or close by at least.

Yeah, I was there too and had forgotten about that.

The second stage was much smaller though but it still worked.

Eh I dunno, I think it was a fine placement for that festival specifically. It meant that the fans were really fans who weren't trying to camp out at AM for hours before they came on. The "worst" part was Pendulum overlapping so I missed the beginning, not actually a complaint.

They stole the show from AM anyway and everyone who was there knows it, it was like taking a Zopiclone afterwards.

I’m pretty sure that I saw the end of Pendulum and the start of BMTH (Reading).

Disclaimer- I’d been on the beer solidly all day so my recollection may be a bit hazy.

It's 25 tomorrow, so it'll just be some limited edition thing they put out this year. I'd still rock up if they played Nimrod in full though, it's their third best for my money.

2024 American Idiot anniversary tour is gonna be a wild one.

Yeah, i live Nimrod but even if anyone doesn’t, it’ll be done in little over half an hour.
