Opener seemed to be the first place which announced him back last time - so that’s the festival I’m really watching as they seem to be extremely keen in getting him back. At the moment there is still a space but we do seem to be missing a fair few of the people who are probably about. I don’t think it’s a done deal but it doesn’t look like RW / Nos have him. I really want to be wrong though. Just as a caveat.

According to the RW forum the final headliner for NOS alive is intended to be RHCP. Which they are apparently in negotiations for. That means that Kendrick Lamar is not returning to Rock Werchter or NOS Alive which he was due to play in 2020. So it’s not looking great for Kendrick prospects in Europe 2022. A reminder that one user says he’s not coming back to Europe until 2023.

Oh no I’m just going off on a rant. The truth is there is no evidence there is only a fact he’s about and available. It’s also interlinked with the fact that some 2020 headliners could not be back and there being a potential spot available. Problem with Elton is that we’ve had this before where he’s been available to play and hasn’t.

It’s a pet peeve of mine when people ask for a high standard of evidence on a festival speculation forum. Like what do they expect? Us to produce the contracts in advance of their announcement. To me efestivals definition of “nailed on” means, on a festival tour, Glastonbury gap, not playing any other competing festivals, and perhaps some cryptic quote in the press like “I’d love to play I hope glasto ask me”. That’s pretty much as far as we get in terms of a ‘nailed on’ confirmation. I don’t know why people expect more? A strong rumour is someone who is around, has a gap, would fit the festival, and doesn’t seem to be anywhere else. I’d say Elton fits this. Only thing Elton is missing is some proximity to the festival. We need something from Emily or Elton himself to actually discuss interest in having him play. Then il feel more confident. At the moment it feels like Deja vu where he is just around, but that’s it.

Elton has had many chances to play and doesn’t. I am going to be cautious about it for this exact reason. I wonder if he was asked a long time ago and said that he didn’t fancy it.

The problem is now these lot just seem like heretics and the tide is surely turning against them. You say turn down as if Elton is raring to play and the festival would be saying no. In that situation I agree with you, if Elton was knocking on the door then I imagine he’d step in. But I don’t think that really suits Eltons character, he’s a first choice person and I can imagine you negotiate with him, he doesn’t negotiate with you. It’s nothing to do with diversity quotas and I don’t know why you see it that way even though I made the point specifically about music style?

I get that but I don’t really see Elton as someone you can loop in as a replacement. Seems like someone you have to secure years in advance with a shit tonne of negotiating.

I think you’re deliberately over complicating my point or not quite registering the point I want to make. I’m not saying Kendrick’s fans are not diverse, I’m saying that some fans may want something with a bit of crossover to soften the blow. If Kendrick is dropped and replaced with Elton all of a sudden the top bill doesn’t become that diverse. That’s all I’m trying to say. * and to help explain what I mean if the killers dropped out of 2019 I would expect them to get a band similar to try and keep the lineup fair.

I’d say their styles are pretty different but my point is not about getting someone who is like for like a Kendrick replacement, but maybe something Kendrick fans would look at on the bill and think “ah that sucks but I don’t mind that replacement”. as a caveat I think both Dua and Dave fit that mould too. I can see Kendrick fans looking at the lineup and finding it a bit strange to see Elton John in Kendricks spot.

Got some weird gut feeling at the moment that Billie is maybe stepping forward into the fold. The Saturday O2 date looked like she has other plans but venues she’s planning to play she’s announced. There are indications she has some festivals to be announced soon too. (Mad Cool etc). if Paul is back and he takes the Saturday, then she is a prime candidate to step in for either Kendrick or Taylor, and she would be a decent replacement for either.

Nah I don’t see it that way. If Elton isn’t already locked in because he planned to play before the great panini, then I think they won’t be chasing after him. Billie would be a good replacement for Kendrick as she has crossover with his fans. I just think if a hip hop act can’t make it they will try and keep the balance that 2020 had.

This is another thing - if Elton isn’t someone they already have lined up would they run to replace Kendrick with someone like Elton? Or would they go for a younger act?

I personally don’t think they will be back - Chris Martin was pretty aware of the bad press they get now by headlining too much. I won’t be surprised though if they plan their tours with a glasto gap just as an act of goodwill, or if the festival really needs them with someone pulling out.

Didn’t someone say that the park in Sheffield they had dates to play has been pushed back to 2023? Arctics sound like a 2023 thing.
